Payroll Specialist

Smithbucklin, a 650-person, employee-owned professional services company with more than 70 years of success serving the association market, with primary offices in Chicago and Washington, D.C., is looking for a Payroll Specialist to join our Corporate Finance team in our Chicago office.
The Payroll Specialist plays a key role within Smithbucklin’s Corporate Finance team, supporting accurate and compliant payroll operations across multiple states. This role partners closely with internal teams and external providers to ensure payroll data integrity, timely reporting, and smooth day‑to‑day processes.

What You Will Do:
  • Overseeing the payroll process in a multi-state company.
  • Assist with payroll tax calculations and deductions.
  • Monthly reconciliations and closing for payroll, tax, and benefit accounts.
  • Reconciliation of quarterly and annual payroll tax filings to monthly journal entries.
  • Create necessary reporting and data extracts
  • Collaborate with HR to ensure accurate employee data.
  • Handle employee inquiries related to payroll.
  • Assisting others in the Finance Dept regarding shared or miscellaneous projects as they arise

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred.
  • 4+ years of experience processing multi-state payroll.
  • High attention to detail with strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and ADP payroll systems
  • Solid interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree

Smithbucklin is a hybrid work environment with in-office days established as Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. Employees will work a standard 40-hour week, with the possibility of additional hours based on project deadlines.

Smithbucklin considers several factors when determining compensation, including a candidate's recent coursework, training, experience, and certifications, among other considerations. The expected pay for this role is $70,000-$80,000
