Position Summary

The Phlebotomist is responsible for performing venipuncture blood collection in a clinical setting, ensuring patient safety, specimen integrity, and exceller.1 patient experience. The Phlebotomist will float between key UCA Clinics based on schedule needs. This role supports providers and clinical staff by accurately collecting, labeling, and processing specimens for laboratory testing.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform venipuncture, capillary sticks, and specimen collection following established protocols
  • Verify patient identity using two identifiers prior to specimen collection
  • Label specimens accurately and ensure proper handling, storage, and transport
  • Enter or verify orders in the electronic health record (EHR) system
  • Maintain knowledge of test requirements (e.g., fasting, timing, tube types)
  • Monitor patients for adverse reactions and provide appropriate care
  • Maintain clean, organized, and stocked phlebotomy areas
  • Follow infection control, OSHA, and safety guidelines
  • Assist with specimen processing (centrifuging, packaging, shipping)
  • Provide excellent customer service and patient communication
  • Collaborate with providers, nurses, and lab personnel
  • Document procedures and report issues or specimen concerns

Working Conditions

    • Clinical/medical office environment
    • Prolonged standing and walking
    • Exposure to bloodborne pathogens (PPE required)
    • May assist with early morning or high-volume patient flow

Physical Requirements

    • Ability to stand for extended periods
    • Manual dexterity for specimen collection
    • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program preferred
  • Certification preferred (e.g., CPT, PBT)
  • 1+ year of phlebotomy experience in a clinical or outpat:!nt setting preferred
  • Experience with EHR systems preferred
