Position Summary:

Perform general police work on all St. Croix Tribal trust lands to maintain public safety through the enforcement of Federal and State laws and Tribal ordinances.

Essential Functions:

  • Patrol assigned areas
  • Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for service, including crimes in progress, accidents, medical emergencies, disturbances and all other public safety related calls.
  • Assist other Law Enforcement Agencies through Mutual Aid as requested
  • Conduct preliminary investigations and follow-up on reported incidents
  • Actively engage with community members and groups to build partnerships and participate in events.
  • Enforce Federal, State, Tribal laws and ordinances within the jurisdiction
  • Issue citations, warnings, and make arrests when necessary
  • Prepare detailed and accurate reports for documentation and for review by prosecutors
  • Collect and process evidence and property
  • Testify in court or other hearings as requested
  • Collaborate with other Law Enforcement Agencies, Emergency Services, Tribal Groups, or other groups with vested interest in the St. Croix Tribe
  • Assist other departments as needed, including Wisconsin Probation and Parole, Tribal Courts, DVSA, ICW, Tribal Housing and other departments as needed
  • Serve and enforce arrest warrants and search warrants
  • Attend training as required in firearms, emergency vehicle operation, legal updates and all other certifications as needed
  • All other duties as assigned by supervisors

Police Officer Job Duties:

  • Patrol Tribal Lands to deter and detect criminal activity
  • Enforce criminal and non-criminal traffic laws
  • Enforce Tribal, State, Federal Laws and ordinances
  • Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for service
  • Investigate criminal activity, including interviews, evidence collection, completing detailed reports and making arrest
  • Complete arrests and transport inmates to the appropriate detention facility
  • Build relationships with community members to establish trust and communication
  • Attend community events and outreach programs
  • Coordinate with other Law Enforcement agencies
  • Assist other Law Enforcement or emergency service provider as requested
  • Maintain certifications
  • Attend trainings as requested or as required by the DOJ
  • Complete special assignments through supervisors
  • Assist Tribal Court as a bailiff as needed
  • Testify as a witness in court for preliminary hearings, motion hearings, jury trials for Federal, State and Tribal Courts
  • Maintain relationships with programs including Tribal DVSA, Tribal Housing, Tribal Courts, GLIFWC, and other surrounding Law Enforcement agencies and emergency service providers
  • Maintain proper working order of and equipment, vehicle and firearms issued by the St. Croix Tribal Police Department
  • Complete detailed incident reports
  • Preserve and collect evidence related to a crime
  • Any other duties assigned by supervisor or Chief of Police

Physical Demands/Environment Factors:

  • Ability to walk, climb, bend, kneel, crouch for extended periods of time while patrolling, completing investigations or responding to emergencies
  • Occasionally run, often over uneven terrain or in varying weather conditions
  • Occasionally lift, carry, or drag objects weighing up to 100 pounds
  • Occasionally lift, carry, or drag individuals weighing over 100 pounds
  • Ability to use physical force techniques to restrain individuals
  • Sit for long periods of time while patrolling or completing at desk related tasks
  • Stand for long periods of time during calls or events
  • Perform under physical and mental stress in potentially dangerous situations
  • Work outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold as well as rain, snow, sleet and wind
  • Potential exposure to hazards including, blood borne pathogens, bodily fluids, infectious diseases, water, fire, firearms, edged weapons or physically aggressive individuals
  • Exposure to environments with high noise levels, including emergency sirens, gun fire, and crowds
  • Work shifts that extend past midnight, into the early morning

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be 21 years or older
  • 60 college credits within 5 years of hiring
  • Must hold certification or be certifiable as a Law Enforcement Officer in the State of Wisconsin
  • Pass a formal background investigation
  • Submit to drug testing during application process and subject to random testing
  • Free from and physical, emotional, or mental health conditions that would adversely affect the performance of Law Enforcement duties
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license with an insurable driving record
  • No felony convictions or domestic abuse convictions
  • Ability to use radio equipment, computer equipment and telephone equipment
  • Proficient in verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to multi-task while being detail oriented
  • Ability to prepare clear and accurate reports
  • Ability to handle stressful situations under time constraints with absence of supervision
  • Must maintain confidentiality of organizational information
  • Ability to maintain proficiency in required qualifications including but not limited to firearms and emergency vehicle operation
  • Show awareness of St. Croix Tribal culture and history

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Completion of a two-year associate degree from an accredited Collegiate or Technical School in Criminal Justice or Law Enforcement or higher
  • Active certification as Law Enforcement Officer in the State of Wisconsin

Native American Preference Given in Accordance with P.L. 93-638 and Amendments

Pay: $57,387.20 - $72,779.20 per year
