This is an exciting time to work for Amarillo College! We are seeking our next Police Officer who will be all-in on our mission and who provides law enforcement, safety, and security services to the Amarillo College community through proactive patrol, timely response to calls for service, and enforcement of applicable laws and College policies. The officer engages in community-oriented policing by building positive relationships with students, faculty, and staff while supporting a safe and secure campus environment. The officer conducts investigations, prepares reports, and collaborates with internal departments and external agencies to ensure effective response to incidents, emergencies, and public safety needs.
EDUCATION:
Required: High School Diploma or GED and completion of a Basic Law Enforcement Academy and Certified Texas Peace Officer.
Preferred: Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Public Safety, or related field.
EXPERIENCE:
Required: One (1) year of full-time law enforcement experience as a licensed peace officer.
Preferred: Two (2) or more years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience, preferably in a campus or community policing environment.
CERTIFICATES/LICENSES:
Required: Valid Texas Driver’s License with safe driving record and Current Texas Peace Officer License in good standing, issued by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, including the Texas Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure, and applicable traffic laws.

Knowledge of basic law enforcement practices, including patrol procedures, investigations, report writing, and evidence handling.

Knowledge of campus safety practices and community-oriented policing principles.

Knowledge of emergency response procedures and officer safety protocols.

Skill in observation and situational awareness to identify suspicious activity and potential safety concerns.

Skill in effective verbal and written communication, including clear report writing and professional public interaction.

Skill in conflict resolution and de-escalation in a variety of situations.

Skill in operating law enforcement equipment, vehicles, and communication systems.

Salary: Amarillo College follows a lag pay strategy, with starting offers typically between the minimum and midpoint of the pay grade, rarely reaching the maximum to support long-term growth within each position.

12 Amarillo College Pay Grades (salary is determined by Human Resources based on education, work experience and internal comparisons).
Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the Amarillo College Police Officer must be able to stand and walk for extended periods, including foot and bicycle patrols. The position requires the ability to run short distances, climb stairs, crouch, bend, stoop, kneel, and occasionally lift, carry, push, pull, or maneuver individuals and equipment weighing up to one-hundred (100) pounds. Officers must frequently use their hands and fingers to operate communication equipment, vehicles, firearms, and other law enforcement tools. Normal vision (corrected or uncorrected), hearing, and overall physical stamina are required to quickly detect, assess, and respond to incidents. The role also demands the physical capability to restrain or detain individuals safely in accordance with departmental procedures and training.
Working Conditions: Must be willing to work a flexible schedule (days, nights, weekends, holidays, and varying events as necessary). The nature of police work involves a high degree of risk and can involve exposure to hazards such as criminal activity, emergency response situations, traffic stops, and a wide variety of calls for service. Officers may be recalled for duty during emergencies and are expected to remain calm and effective in high-stress circumstances.
Work Environment: The work environment may involve exposure to physical hazards and requires strict adherence to safety protocols. Officers may encounter extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, loud noises, and unpleasant odors. Duties are performed in a variety of indoor and outdoor settings, including during inclement weather and emergency conditions.
