Principal Database Engineer
What’s important to us:
We are looking for a Principal Database Engineer to own and drive database architecture and strategy for large-scale, business-critical systems. This role requires deep technical expertise, architectural leadership, and the ability to influence engineering and client stakeholders across multiple projects and platforms.
Key Responsibilities
Architecture & Strategy
Architecture & Strategy
- Define and govern database architecture standards across projects
- Design highly scalable, fault-tolerant, and secure data platforms
- Evaluate and select database technologies based on business and technical needs
- Own long-term database and data platform roadmap
Performance, Scale & Reliability
- Architect solutions for high-throughput, low-latency systems
- Lead complex performance tuning and capacity planning initiatives
- Design and govern disaster recovery and multi-region strategies
- Drive reliability engineering practices and database SLAs/SLOs
Cloud & Modern Data Platforms
- Architect and manage databases on AWS, Azure, and GCP
- Guide teams on managed, distributed, and cloud-native database services
- Provide governance for containerized and Kubernetes-based database workloads
- Ensure security, encryption, auditing, and compliance requirements are met
Technical Leadership & Mentorship
- Act as the final authority for database-related technical decisions
- Mentor senior and mid-level database engineers
- Review and approve database architecture and migration designs
- Support presales, solutioning, and client technical discussions
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with CTOs, Architects, Engineering Leads, and Product teams
- Translate business requirements into scalable data solutions
- Represent database architecture in executive and client forums
Required Skills & Experience
- 8 + years of deep database engineering experience
- Expert-level knowledge of multiple RDBMS platforms
- Strong experience with distributed databases and NoSQL systems
- Deep understanding of sharding, partitioning, replication, and consistency models
- Extensive experience with cloud database ecosystems
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code and advanced monitoring tools
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience designing enterprise-scale or multi-tenant data platforms
- Background in compliance-heavy or regulated environments
- Strong consulting or architecture leadership experience
- Cloud and database certifications (highly desirable)
Soft Skills
- Strategic thinking and strong decision-making abilities
- Excellent stakeholder and executive communication skills
- Ability to influence and mentor across teams
