Principal Mechanical Engineering Manager

Microsoft’s Devices Team is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead a multidisciplinary team driving simulation-led design and product development across Surface and other next-generation devices. This is a pivotal leadership role for a technically adept and people-focused manager with a strong foundation in mechanical and/or electrical engineering, and a proven track record of delivering high-impact hardware products.

You will bring deep expertise in mechanical and/or electrical engineering and lead a team of engineers working on multiphysics simulation efforts—including structural, thermal, and electrical domains—to inform design decisions and ensure product performance. Your leadership will guide technical execution from concept through launch, influencing architecture, driving cross-functional alignment, and delivering high-quality hardware at scale.

This role requires a strong ability to partner across disciplines—mechanical, electrical, reliability, manufacturing, and software—and to communicate effectively with both engineering teams and executive stakeholders. Experience with AI/ML integration in engineering workflows is essential.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and grow a high-performing engineering team focused on simulation-led hardware design, system integration, and innovative product development.
  • Drive complex hardware programs, owning strategic planning and end-to-end technical execution from concept through mass production.
  • Apply deep mechanical and/or electrical engineering expertise to guide system-level design and integration, with a strong emphasis on multiphysics simulation across structural, thermal, and electrical domains.
  • Champion the adoption of AI/ML-enhanced simulation and design workflows to accelerate development cycles and improve predictive accuracy.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams—including mechanical, electrical, reliability, manufacturing, software, and design—to align on product goals and resolve complex challenges.
  • Influence technical direction and strategy across teams, mentoring engineers and fostering a culture of innovation, inclusion, and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

Required Qualification:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 10+ years related technical engineering experience
  • OR Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years related technical engineering experience
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 15+ years of experience in hardware engineering, including mechanical or electrical domains.
  • 3+ years of experience in engineering leadership.
  • 3+ years of experience with FEA simulation.
  • Demonstrated experience integrating AI/ML into engineering workflows or simulation environments.
  • Demonstrated experience leading and growing team.
  • Demonstrated experience in collaborating with geographically distributed partner teams.
  • Proven communication skills, both verbal and written.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with PCB design and eCAD tools is a bonus.
  • Proven track record of delivering high-quality hardware products at scale.
  • Solid communication and stakeholder management skills across technical and executive audiences.
