Professional/Technical Paraeducator - Vision Program, Job 25-0844 TLC

This is a 3.0 hour per day, 180 days per year, Professional/Technical Paraeducator in the Vision Programat Teaching and Learning Center. This position does not include benefits. Anticipated start date will be as soon as possible.

Hours for this position will vary.

Minimum Qualifications: Braille experience preferred. Must be willing to train and earn a certificate if not currently certified.

Preferred Qualifications: Braille proficient. Office Word 365 proficient.

JOB SUMMARY:

Supports the education of visually impaired students in all programs by adapting instructional materials into alternate literary formats including but not limited to: Braille, large print, audio, digital, and tactile graphics; transcribes student Braille to text, provides 1-on-1 Braille instruction, assists students with daily activities; Assists with planning, reviewing, and implementing special education services for students; serves as a resource to other district personnel requiring assistance with blind and low vision students.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Provide support/tutoring to blind or low vision students for the purpose of reinforcing classroom objectives and curriculum content, under the supervision of assigned classroom teacher. Support Individual Educational Plan (IEP) goals for students by teaching Literary Braille, Nemeth Braille Code, and Braille technology under the supervision of a vision teacher.
• Transcribe student work from braille to text for sighted staff members.
• Independently support IEP goals for safe travel within the buildings, playgrounds, field trips, and vocational training sites.
• Adapt curriculum into alternate literary formats, frequently make independent decisions on how to adapt visual material by translating into Braille or large print, create tactile graphics, etc. for the purpose of providing a clear understanding and interpretation.
• Independently order and maintain an inventory of all Braille, large print and alternate format curriculum and an array of blind and low vision materials.
• Under the supervision of the teacher(s), administer multiple student tests, collect and maintain diagnostic and test data, update student records, and assess student progress.
• Assist teacher(s) with monitoring and managing student behavior and progress; share observations with teacher(s) and other professional staff.
• Assist teacher(s) with implementation of various strategies to address diverse student needs and support individual educational growth and achievement goals.
• Provide clerical and general classroom assistance for staff, which may include collection and data entry of information, correspondence, copying, filing, and preparation of classroom materials.
• Travel between schools as needed.
• Respond to inquiries (e.g. parents, teachers, staff, etc.) for the purpose of providing information or referring to appropriate personnel.
• Participate in meetings and training for the purpose of sharing information, improving the employee skills and knowledge, implementing school initiatives, and addressing student needs.
• Maintain current technical knowledge of the Unified Braille Code and Braille tools.
• Comply with District Policies.
• Maintain consistent presence at assigned worksite and regularly work hours specified.
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job.

• Ability to read and translate Braille.
• Knowledge of all adaptive technology used by the Vision Department.
• Knowledge of adaptive technology for blind and low vision users.
• Knowledge of blind and low vision orientation and mobility skills.
• Knowledge of computer applications used to produce braille and large print (IE Duxbury, Braille Blaster, etc).
• Demonstrated knowledge of math, spelling, reading, grammar, and punctuation.
• Desire and aptitude to work with students.
• Ability to positively and professionally interact with students, supervisors, and staff.
• Ability to work both independently and cooperatively in a team situation.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively support student behavior.
• Demonstrated ability to work with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail and meet deadlines in an atmosphere of frequent interruptions.
• Ability to operate or willingness to learn to operate standard classroom equipment.
• Ability to provide for the physical, health and safety needs of students.
• Knowledge of computer applications used to assist with student learning.
• Ability to strengthen job-related competencies.
• Ability and willingness to work at various sites across district based on program needs.

Education/Certification:

• High school diploma or its equivalent.
• Two years of study at an institution of higher education (72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits) or have obtained an associate’s (or higher) degree or have successfully passed the Para Pro Assessment developed by the Educational Testing Service (ETS).
• Valid Washington Driver's License, with acceptable driving record.
• Demonstrated competency by holding a technical certification from the State of Washington in grade two UEB Braille transcription or pass the exam within 1 year of being hired.

Experience:

Job-related experience preferred: experience working with students with diverse aptitudes and levels of achievement.
