Position Highlights

The Center for Creative Photography (CCP) seeks a motivated and methodical Project Archivist for a two-year extended temporary position. The Project Archivist, in consultation with the Collections Archivist and Head of Collections, will facilitate the movement of acetate negatives, audiovisual material, color prints, and other materials into CCP's new, state-of-the-art frozen and cold storage facility. The Project Archivist will also separate these materials from existing collections, rehouse them appropriately, direct their relocation to the frozen and cold storage vaults, and update finding aids with the new locations. The Project Archivist will also supervise the work of students and volunteers contributing to the relocation of these collection items.

Duties & Responsibilities

Collections Processing and Managing and Cold Storage Collection Move:

  • In consultation with Collections Archivist and Head of Collections, assist with the development of an achievable project timeline for moving designated collection materials to frozen and cold storage.
  • Ensure and support timely progress of archival preservation activities by monitoring workflow milestones, coordinating tasks, and helping team members remain aligned with established procedures and deadlines
  • Separate materials that require frozen or cold storage from existing archival collections.
  • Rehouse materials that will be relocated to frozen or cold storage.
  • In consultation with Collection Archivist and Head of Collections, recommend the most efficient stacks organization for frozen and cold storage in support of preservation and paging activities.
  • Ensure and support timely progress of archival preservation activities by monitoring the movement of and update findings aid for materials being relocated to frozen or cold storage.

Collection Management Activities:

  • Maintain appropriate physical housing and storage of archival collections moving to frozen and cold storage.
  • Perform basic condition assessments for works being relocated to frozen and cold storage.
  • Consult with Conservation as needed regarding condition, housing, and storage considerations for works being relocated to frozen or cold storage.

Service and Professional Development Activities:

  • Develop and maintain in-depth knowledge of best-practices, changes, and trends in archival collections management.
  • Develop and maintain in-depth knowledge of current and emerging trends in cataloging rules, standards, and methodologies for collections
    Participate in committees, collaborative initiatives, and professional organizations related to job duties.
  • Participate in the CCP reference desk rotation.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of library and archival standards and vocabularies, including EAD, DACS and MARC
  • Demonstrated project management skills.
  • Working knowledge of accepted preservation methods applied to archival collections of photographic and audiovisual materials.
  • Experience with the use of cultural heritage tools, technology and platforms, e.g. ArchivesSpace.
  • Understanding of best practices in special collections and archives settings, including a thorough understanding of privacy, safe handling, confidentiality, copyright and use issues.
  • Ability to work with sensitive information with integrity and discretion.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team; commitment to fostering a collaborative, communicative, and creative work environment.
  • Experience handling rare and fragile materials.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Lifting Requirement up to 40lbs

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience is required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited library school or equivalent experience and training.
  • Experience working with photographic materials.
  • Experience with ArchivesSpace or other archives collection management systems.
