PROMOTIONAL - Fire Apparatus Operator

Description

MUST BE A CURRENT LOUISVILLE FIRE DEPARTMENT EMPLOYEE IN THE RANK OF FIREFIGHTER.

Essential Functions:

  • Drives, operates and maintains fire apparatus and assumes command of an engine or truck company in the absence of the Company Commander
  • Operates fire apparatus and performs technical firefighting work

Examples of Duties

  • Inspects, cleans and maintains medical apparatus and other medical equipment
  • Participates in fire suppression activities
  • Operates tillers and drives apparatus assigned to the Division of Fire to and from scenes of fires, tests, exercises and demonstrations
  • Instructs and leads firefighters in the care and use of fire apparatus and other firefighting equipment
  • Maintains records of care, operation, and inspection of firefighting apparatus and equipment
  • Maintains records of conditions at fires, equipment used and results obtained for data processing
  • Gives first aid to injured persons
  • Directs assigned details at fires, in quarters and on inspections
  • Reports conditions observed at fires, in quarters and on inspections to appropriate personnel
  • Assists in conducting company school and other training
  • Assists with the investigation of fires of unknown or suspicious origin
  • Acts as Courier of official correspondence as directed
  • Performs related work

Minimum Requirements

  • Must be a regular employee and currently in the rank of Firefighter

  • Five (5) years of combined experience as a Firefighter or Firefighter Recruit in the Louisville Division of Fire

  • If separated any time during the two year period prior to the final filing date the candidate must have been re-employed by the department for at least one year prior to the filing deadline and the separation must have for a period less than one year.

Other Minimums:

  • Must wear personal protective and safety equipment as mandated by OSHA

  • Must be vaccinated for hepatitis B, have provided evidence of immunity, or have signed a declination form within ten days of initial assignment

  • Pumping unit and ladder truck certification papers must be on file in the Civil Service Office

  • Certification as a Driver/Operator from the Louisville Division of Fire

  • Must be certified and maintain certification as an Emergency Medical Technician-Ambulance or Emergency Technician-Paramedic in the State of Kentucky

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license


Physical Requirement & Working Conditions:

  • Meets regular and punctual attendance standards and any special needs of the position as determined by management, including mandatory overtime and performing related work
  • Communicates with individuals in person and utilizes all types of communication media
  • Lifts and carries items weighing in excess of 100 pounds in a team setting
  • Spends prolonged periods of time exposed to the elements
  • Endures extended periods of cardiovascular stress
  • Wears fully encapsulating entry suits
  • Observes traffic in vicinity of an emergency scene; observes fire code violations; and reads and prepares reports and correspondence

Supplemental Information

The deadline for meeting minimum length of service qualifications for promotional examinations will not be at the time of the exam. Individuals taking promotional examinations will be allowed to take such examinations if they meet the length of service requirement on or before August 14, 2026.
