This is a project positions with and end date of June 30, 2027, however funding is anticipated beyond that date.

About the Position:
This position provides expert evidence management of evidence submitted to the Toxicology Laboratory Division for forensic toxicology testing.

The PEC interacts with laboratory management (supervisors, managers, command staff), all technical and/or administrative personnel and customers, including law enforcement agencies, attorneys, medical examiners and coroners.

About the Division:

The Washington State Toxicology Laboratory, established in 1963, performs drug and alcohol testing for coroners, medical examiners, law enforcement agencies, prosecuting attorneys, and the State Liquor and Cannabis Board (WSLCB) in all 39 Washington counties. The Division receives approximately 18,000 cases per year of which approximately 65 percent are law enforcement DUI cases and 35 percent coroner/medical examiner cases. The Division is overseen by the Division Commander and has a staff of 45 personnel consisting of State Toxicologist, Management, Forensic Scientist Supervisors, Forensic Scientists, Quality Assurance, Property and Evidence Custodians, and Administrative staff. Forensic Scientists perform analysis of samples submitted to the laboratory and provide court testimony as experts on alcohol, drugs, and their effects.

Duties

  • Provide evidence handling.
  • Screen request for analysis.
  • Assign case numbers and create electronic case files in database.
  • Enter evidence data into the computerized laboratory database.
  • Store evidence appropriately.
  • Responsible for evidence transactions.
  • Release of evidence to forensic scientist.
  • Release of evidence back to submitting agencies.
  • Disposal of evidence.
  • Maintain case file and all evidence transaction records.
  • Conduct periodic inventory and audit of evidence.
  • Testify in court regarding the chain of custody if required.
  • Maintain a safe work environment.
  • Provide office support.
  • Organize and update records for archive.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma.
  • Must have valid Washington State driver’s license to transport evidence to/from the Federal Way Toxicology Laboratory.
  • Provide an oral DNA sample to be used in the CODIS Elimination Profile Index.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Successful completion of a pre-employment polygraph examination and background investigation.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $46,080.00 - $61,644.00 per year
