Position Summary
The PSS Intern will support the HR team in delivering high-quality services across talent acquisition, onboarding, employee experience, and HR operations. This internship provides hands-on experience in a mission-driven nonprofit environment serving approximately 450 employees. The intern will gain exposure to core HR functions while contributing to initiatives that enhance employee engagement, compliance, and organizational effectiveness.
Key Responsibilities
Talent Acquisition & Onboarding
- Assist with posting open positions and updating job boards
- Support candidate sourcing (LinkedIn, job boards, internal databases)
- Assist with new hire orientation preparation
- Maintain applicant tracking system (ATS) data accuracy
HR Operations & Administration
- Support document management, filing, and audit preparation
- Assist with general HR inquiries
- Track onboarding/offboarding checklists
- Support benefits administration tasks (open enrollment prep, employee questions)
Employee Experience & Engagement
- Assist in planning employee engagement events and recognition programs
- Help gather and analyze employee feedback (surveys, pulse checks)
- Contribute to culture-building initiatives aligned with organizational values
Learning & Development

Support training coordination, scheduling, materials prep, and attendance tracking

Assist with Relias course assignments, tracking, and reporting

Help create training materials, job aids, and microlearning content

Update content using authoring and Microsoft Office tools

Analyze survey data to identify trends and improvement opportunities
Compliance & HR Projects
- Assist with policy updates and handbook revisions
- Participate in special HR projects (DEI initiatives, training coordination, process improvements)
- Conduct research on HR best practices and present findings to the team
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the internship, the intern will:
- Gain foundational knowledge of HR practices in a nonprofit setting
- Develop skills in recruiting, onboarding, and HR systems
- Understand California employment law basics and compliance practices
- Build professional communication and organizational skills
- Experience cross-functional collaboration within a mission-driven organization
Qualifications
- Current undergraduate or graduate student in Human Resources, Business Administration, Psychology, or related field (or recent graduate)
- Strong interest in HR and nonprofit work
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with professionalism
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook); familiarity with HRIS/ATS a plus
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous internship or administrative experience
- Interest in employee experience, DEI, or talent development
Familiarity with California labor law concepts (a plus, not required)
