Under supervision of the Psychiatrist, the PMHNP assesses, diagnoses, and treats adult individuals with psychiatric disorders, including prescribing medications and providing psychotherapy.
Key responsibilities include:
Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and mental health assessments across the lifespan
Diagnose and manage a range of psychiatric disorders, including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, PTSD, and schizophrenia
Prescribe, monitor, and adjust psychotropic medications in accordance with evidence-based guidelines
Provide individual and family psychotherapy as indicated, utilizing evidence-based therapeutic modalities
Collaborate with interdisciplinary treatment teams, including psychiatrists, psychologists, counselors, and social workers, to ensure coordinated care
Educate patients and families on mental health conditions, treatment options, medication management, and wellness strategies
Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant documentation in electronic health records (EHR)
Monitor medication adherence, side effects, and therapeutic outcomes
Order, interpret, and review laboratory tests related to necessary treatment
Advocate for patients’ mental health needs within healthcare systems and the community
Ensure accuracy and compliance with required policies and procedures
Ensure compliance with legal, ethical, and regulatory standards applicable to the respective scope of practice
Participate in crisis intervention, risk assessment, and stabilization efforts to ensure patient safety
Required Qualifications:
Completion of Board Certification such asPsychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC™)
Licensed to practice as Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner in the Commonwealth of Virginia, with prescriptive authority and three (3) to five (5) years of related experience is preferred.
Basic Life Support Certification.
