The Office of Mental Health’s mission is to support the recovery of people with mental illnesses. We provide a complete array of medical and support services for children, adults, and families throughout South Carolina.

As a member of the treatment team, interviews, diagnoses and prescribes care and treatment of the psychiatric patients. Prescribes medication, psychotherapy and provides evaluation of patients and consultation to other medical and non-medical staff, confers with and advises medical doctors, agency representatives, staff members in the care and treatment of the psychiatric patient. Under general supervision, exercises medical responsibility to identified patients and duties with both adult and child populations. Assists with the Center's overall analysis of broad problems and planning interested activities. Provides services in a culturally sensitive manner.
Responsibilities for the Psychiatrist:
  • See assigned patients, including adults, children and adolescents, provides psychiatric evaluation of patients, prescribes medication where indicates, offers consultation regarding the care and treatment of patients. Maintains compliance with federal, state, and local Corporate Compliance laws.
  • Assign coordinates student rotations at the Center according to provider availability. Prepares required documents (calendars, schedules, and other correspondence) for distribution. Liaison with contracted school(s) for students. Manages the evaluative process of the program. Updates the Medical Director annually and when necessary.
  • Compile with all application Quality Assurance, Corporate Compliance, and Cultural Competency policies, procedures, and regulations, and all federal and state laws, as well as training classified as mandatory by federal and state regulations. Engages in additional training to maintain professional development.
  • Provides consultation for clinical staff and supervises staff in the medical aspect of treatment when needed.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

  • Graduation from an approved school of medicine and completion of three (3) years of residency in psychiatrist with at least two (2) years of experience in a psychiatric program.
  • Board certified

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bilingual abilities in English and Spanish (or another language) are a plus.

Additional Comments

Post hire, employee must:

  • Successfully complete the Basic Fundamentals course with a minimum grade of 75.
  • Be able to pass CPR and Managing Agitation in the Psychiatric Setting (MAPS) Certification.
  • Be licensed to practice medicine in South Carolina.
  • Perform all jobs duties and provide all services and documentation in compliance with CARF, OMH, CCMHC, Quality Assurance, Compliance, HIPAA, Transcultural and Productivity Standards, Policies and Procedures.
