This position is responsible for consistently and actively providing high-quality service to all patrons, as well as promoting an accommodating, welcoming library environment. The incumbent is also responsible for certain additional clerical functions that are vital to successful library operation.

Guidelines consist of the library branch manual, the county personnel manual, relevant county procedures, and supervisor’s instructions. Guidelines require judgement, selection and interpretation in application.

Contacts are typically with people or organizations in the community which utilize services of the library. Contacts are also with fellow employees in the library system.

Employee performs tasks while intermittently standing, sitting, or walking. Employee often has to reach, bend, or crouch in order to access materials. Employee must frequently lift light (less than 24 pounds) and must occasionally lift heavy (25-50 pounds) objects. Employee must possess manual dexterity.


PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Perform circulation functions including checking in and out library materials, renewing library materials, processing reserve materials and routing materials to other libraries and collecting fines and fees.
  • Registers new patrons by reviewing application forms and issuing or replacing library cards.
  • Responds to standard questions regarding library services and policies both in the library and on the telephone; direct patrons to appropriate areas and departments.
  • Performs some computer data entry procedures.
  • Maintains reserve shelf and notifies patrons when books are available.
  • Resolves minor patron problems in conformity with library procedures and policies.
  • Process returns and payments; maintain records of collection activity.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of cataloging system, of library-specific software and personal computers.
  • Knowledge of library arrangement, services and policies.
  • Knowledge of basic public desk and telephone etiquette.
  • Knowledge of the use of standard office equipment, including computers, calculators, photocopiers, etc.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in dealing tactfully and effectively with a variety of individuals, including library staff, patrons, and general public.
  • Skill in exercising sound judgment in interpreting established library policies and procedures when dealing with patrons.
  • Skill in repairing and mending books.
  • Skill in performing clerical work with speed and accuracy.

DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent. Any combination of experience and training that would be likely to provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be two years experience working in a library of comparable size and complexity. Possession of or the ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license.

A combination of education and/or work experience may be substituted for minimum requirements.
