JOB SUMMARY: The Public Defender will provide legal representation for Defendants in criminal cases filed with the Nambe Pueblo Tribal Court. The Public Defendant will be responsible for preparing all motions, briefs, and legal documents, handling pre-trial discovery, interviewing witnesses, withdrawal pleas, suppression motions, and appeals. The Public Defender will participate in training sessions to ensure proper legal representation of individuals who qualify for representation. The Public Defendant will also be responsible for maintaining a professional relationship with the Prosecutor, and maintain professional relationships with clients. The Public Defendant will also be responsible for other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s Degree, Juris Doctor Degree, member in good standing with the New Mexico State Bar Association. Must satisfactorily pass a background check. Must understand Native American community and culture, as well as experience working with people from diverse ethnic groups and various backgrounds. Must demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to maintain confidentiality.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $120.00 - $140.00 per hour

Expected hours: 12 per week
