Working Conditions
- This position will report to either the Allenby Building in Sacramento or Metropolitan State Hospital located in Norwalk. A hybrid Telework schedule, consistent with the State of California's in-office requirement, may be considered with prior approval from management.
- DSH-Sacramento is located at an 11 floor high rise building.
- The State’s Commute Programs provide bicycle, mass transit and vanpool incentives to eligible state employees. The State’s mass transit incentive pays 100% of the transit pass up to the IRS maximum of $325 per month in 2025.
- Travel may be required, up to 25%.

DSH-Sacramento is in a new modern, sustainable and innovative 11 story office building located at 1215 “O” Street, Sacramento, California. Some of the amenities of the new building include the following:
- First-floor retail space (separate access from 12th Street)
- Café with multiple vendors available to the public
- Outdoor seating with pedestrian walkways
- Large, shared conference room on the first floor with a maximum capacity of 162 individuals
- An employee fitness center with a yoga studio, cardio equipment and weights
- Plaza area with a kitchenette on each floor
- Lactation rooms
- More conference rooms and collaborative working spaces available throughout the building – small, medium and large

Desirable Qualifications
- Experience in the following legal areas: mental health law; employment law; administrative law; civil litigation; privacy; Public Records Act; subpoena; public contracting; regulations; legislation.
- Hearing and/or trial experience.
- Experience working with outside counsel.
- Knowledge of rules of evidence, probate code, welfare and institutions code, and penal code.
- Well-developed analytical and communication skills, both verbal and written, superior interpersonal skills, and tact.
- Well-developed legal research, writing, analysis, and advocacy skills.
- Legal analytical and research skills for reviewing difficult, complex, and sensitive rulemaking actions by state agencies.
- Ability to use good judgment in following established program procedures.
- Superior work habits, the ability to complete work under deadlines, and ability to adjust to shifting priorities.
- Experience drafting, reviewing, and revising legal documents such as pleadings, contracts, letters, memos, and legislation.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, program staff and management, staff of other state and federal agencies, and client advocacy organizations, while working independently and as part of a team.

- The Department of State Hospitals (DSH) Legal Division engages with a number of clients and stakeholders as it relates to individuals committed to DSH. Describe your experience engaging with clients and internal or external stakeholders. Include any experience leading projects or meetings.
- As an Attorney III you will be expected to handle difficult and sensitive matters facing DSH, including interaction with judges, prosecutors, and public defenders who may not agree with the information you are providing to them. Describe your experience and approach appearing before an unreceptive bench or opposing counsel.
- As an Attorney III you will be expected to handle hearings representing DSH. Please describe your experience appearing before courts including criminal courts, civil courts, or administrative bodies.
