Public Health Intern - Summer Food Service Program

About DCHD:
Mission: To protect and promote healthier lifestyles through prevention and education.
As a certified health department, the Douglas County Health Department is responsible for several programs as well as many other public health services. Programs are grouped into divisions relating to either nursing, environmental health or health education. All programs have an educational component. The goal of this department is to increase the awareness and number of persons reached in this educational process.


Job Summary:

To provide administrative, logistical, and operational support to the Summer Food Service Program, ensuring the smooth and efficient delivery of nutritious meals to children during the summer months.
Duties/Responsibilities:


Meal Site Support:
  • Assist with the setup and operation of meal packing sites, including ensuring proper food storage, handling, and preparation.
  • Monitor meal distribution, ensuring that meals are delivered accurately and efficiently.
  • Assist with the clean-up and closing of packing sites.
Administrative Tasks:
  • Assist with data entry, record-keeping, and reporting related to the program.
  • Prepare and distribute program materials, such as flyers and registration forms.
  • Support program outreach efforts, including contacting meal sites and community partners.
Food Safety and Quality:
  • Adhere to all food safety guidelines and regulations.
  • Assist with the planning and packing of meals and snacks, ensuring they meet nutritional standards.
  • Participate in food safety training and activities.
Other Duties:
  • Assist with other tasks as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Participate in program meetings and trainings.
  • Contribute to the overall success of the SFSP.

Qualifications and Requirements:
  • Regular predictable attendance is required.
  • Travel to off-site events and campaigns.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills. Friendly, enthusiastic, and positive attitude.
  • Valid driver’s license and car insurance required.

Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Occasionally you will experience outdoor events with unpredictable weather conditions.
