Job Summary

Under administrative direction, is responsible for managing, assigned planning, directing, organizing, coordinating, and evaluating services for designated Library Locations to meet present and future needs for the San Antonio Public Library. Serves as a primary liaison between staff and Library Administration. Working conditions are primarily inside an office environment. Exercises direct supervision over assigned staff.

This position is an "unclassified" position and has no disciplinary appeal rights to the Municipal Civil Service Commission. This position is likewise subject to at-will employment status and can be terminated at any time for any reason.

Work Hours
8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., Monday - Friday. May require occasional evenings and weekends.

Essential Job Functions

  • Oversees the operation of assigned Libraries.
  • Conducts site visits.
  • Collects data, prepares reports, and develops goals and objectives for the assigned Libraries.
  • Creates, interprets, analyzes, and summarizes various routine and non-routine documents.
  • Resolves a wide range of routine and non-routine patron issues and difficult situations.
  • Coordinates support services and activities within assigned Libraries including facilities maintenance and technology.
  • Interviews, selects, supervises, develops, evaluates, counsels, and if necessary, discipline personnel according to established City of San Antonio policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Prepares, submits, and maintains a budget.
  • Coordinates and/or completes major special projects including committee work or other initiatives.
  • Develops, recommends, and coordinates the implementation of new policies and procedures.
  • Interprets policies and procedures to staff and patrons.
  • Participates in strategic and long range planning for the operation and future development of Library Services including capital and facilities projects and annual budget.
  • Represents the City of San Antonio and the San Antonio Public Library to the public and City and community stakeholders.
  • Keeps apprised of new trends, effective practices, and innovations in and related to public library services and administration.
  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Job Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Library Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited university.
  • Six (6) years experience as a professional librarian.
  • Two (2) years of management experience.
  • Valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience supervising daily operations of a facility.
  • Experience serving as a direct supervisor to assigned staff.
  • Experience working with stakeholders in the community.
  • Spanish language proficiency.

Applicant Information

  • Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.

  • Skill in supervising, selecting, training, monitoring, counseling, and evaluating assigned staff.
  • Ability to operate a computer keyboard and other basic office equipment.
  • Ability to analyze professional and administrative matters and take appropriate action.
  • Ability to assess and evaluate community needs for library services.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff and the general public.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to develop, implement, and administer goals, objectives, and procedures for providing effective and efficient services for the City.
  • Ability to analyze problems, provide alternatives, identify solutions in support of established goals, project consequences of proposed actions, and implement recommendations.
  • Ability to identify and respond to community and City Council issues, concerns, and needs.
  • Ability to provide administrative and professional leadership and direction to subordinate staff.
  • Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision, and use rational judgment in making work-related decisions.
  • Ability to deliver formal presentations to small and large groups.
  • Ability to prepare and present clear and concise reports.
