Real Estate Bookkeeper

A Little Bit About Us: The co-founders of Build Bookkeeping are active real estate investors who recognized a significant need in the industry for reliable and efficient financial services tailored specifically to real estate professionals. This insight led them to start Build Bookkeeping. In addition to helping countless clients maintain strong financial hygiene, they own a personal portfolio of rental properties.

Our Mission: At Build Bookkeeping, our mission is to empower small businesses and entrepreneurs by providing accurate, reliable, and timely bookkeeping solutions that foster growth. We are committed to delivering personalized services that help our clients stay organized while focusing on what matters most — building their business. We aim to build long-term partnerships and support the financial success of every client we serve.

Where and How You’d Work:

Build Bookkeeping is a virtual business based in La Crosse, WI, serving clients nationwide. This mostly remote role allows you to work from home during set hours, with occasional in-person connections. Unlike traditional accounting firms with rigid 9–5 schedules and cubicles, here, you’ll have the freedom to work from home and structure your day around a consistent schedule that still allows space for real life. You’ll work directly with the business owners, not through layers of management, which means you’ll see the tangible impact of your work each month.

Details & Qualifications

  • Pay: Approximately $20-$22 hour, depending on experience.
  • Hours: ~15-20 hours per week
  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous experience handling accounts payable/receivable, reconciliations, payroll entries, or general accounting tasks.
  • Experience with QuickBooks Online
  • Experience with real estate–related transactions and tracking, including rental income, property expenses, and asset addition/disposal.

What You’d Do in This Role:

  • Handle day-to-day bookkeeping tasks, including entering transactions, reconciling accounts, and categorizing receipts.
  • Prepare and review monthly reports, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Assist with payroll entries, expense tracking, and other recurring financial processes as needed.
  • Identify discrepancies or unusual transactions, investigate, and resolve them efficiently.
  • Occasionally tackle special projects, like audits, reconciliations for new accounts, or process improvements, keeping things interesting beyond the routine.

You’re Probably a Match If:

  • You have experience as a bookkeeper, administrative assistant, and/or activities related to real estate.
  • You appreciate systems and processes — and take ownership in keeping them running smoothly month after month.
  • You don’t mind (or even like!) repetitive tasks — because you know consistency and accuracy are key in bookkeeping.
  • You can switch gears when something new comes up — a missing receipt, a reconciliation issue, or a process that needs tweaking — and enjoy figuring things out as problems arise.
  • You take pride in doing the little things right — catching small errors, double-checking your work, and keeping things running smoothly behind the scenes.
  • You communicate clearly and professionally — whether you’re sending a quick update, asking a question, or explaining a bookkeeping detail
  • You’re adaptable and open to change — willing to learn new tools, improve systems, and help make things better as the business grows.
  • You’re comfortable working independently and don’t need constant supervision to stay motivated - you thrive in quiet, focused environments.
  • You’re someone who’s always looking to grow — personally and professionally — and you see every task as an opportunity to learn something new or refine your skills.

What Winning Looks Like:

  • Monthly tasks like reconciliations, journal entries, and reports are completed on time and with attention to detail, month after month.
  • You notice small errors or inconsistencies before they become bigger problems and take proactive steps to fix them.
  • You stay organized even when the workload grows or priorities shift — nothing slips through the cracks.
  • You’re self-driven and productive, even when working remotely, and maintain momentum without constant oversight.
  • You take pride in your work and can step back to see the bigger picture: clean, accurate books help businesses succeed.

Other Stuff to Know:

  • This role is primarily remote - reliable internet and a clean, productive workspace are required.
  • As mentioned above, you really need to enjoy computer work and working with numbers — the bulk of the job involves repeatable, month-to-month tasks. While there will be some variety and occasional problems to solve, most of your work follows a predictable flow.
  • Build Bookkeeping is a growing business, which means there will be room for you to grow with us whether that be additional hours, or new tasks and responsibilities over time
