Senior Officer, GL Monitoring and Reconciliation

Job summary

The Senior Officer, GL Monitoring and Reconciliation, is responsible for ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timely reconciliation of all general ledger accounts within the centralized & branch operations function. This role involves monitoring general ledger activity, investigating and resolving discrepancies, and assisting with the month-end and quarter-end and year-end closing processes. The incumbent will work closely with various internal departments and play a key role in minimizing operational risk and ensuring compliance with accounting standards and internal policies.


Key roles and responsibilities:

Daily monitoring and reconciliation :

  • Perform daily, weekly, and monthly reconciliations of complex GL accounts, including suspense, nostro, and internal accounts.
  • Identify, investigate, and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner, escalating long-outstanding items to management.

Process improvement and automation :

  • Develop and implement strategies to improve the efficiency and accuracy of reconciliation processes.
  • Identify and suggest opportunities for process enhancements and automation to minimize manual errors and operational risks.

Audit and compliance :

  • Ensure all reconciliation activities comply with internal policies, accounting standards and external regulatory requirements.
  • Support internal and external audits by providing necessary documentation and explanations related to GL reconciliations.

Reporting and analysis :

  • Prepare and submit periodic reconciliation reports to management, highlighting trends, anomalies, and areas for improvement.
  • Provide ad-hoc financial analysis and reports as required to support business decision-making.

Collaboration and communication :

  • Collaborate with various internal departments (e.g., Finance, IT, and other business units) to resolve transaction discrepancies and operational issues.
  • Communicate complex financial information clearly and concisely to both finance and non-finance stakeholders.

Team support and mentoring :

  • Provide guidance and training to junior team members on reconciliation best practices and procedures.
  • Act as a subject matter expert for reconciliation-related queries within the department.


Skills and qualifications

  • Education : Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field is typically required, with a professional certification like CPA or ACCA being an advantage.
  • Experience : Candidates should have at least 2 to 3 years of relevant experience in financial reconciliation, preferably in a banking or financial services setting with significant general ledger exposure.
  • Technical skills : Essential technical skills include proficiency with financial software and databases, advanced Excel skills (including pivot tables and VLOOKUP), and a solid understanding of accounting principles and financial regulations.
  • Soft skills : Key soft skills for this role are strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, exceptional attention to detail, excellent communication skills (both written and verbal), the ability to work well both independently and in a team, and strong organizational and time-management skills to meet deadlines.
