Site Location: Kaibab National Forest Supervisor’s Office, 800 South 6th St., Williams, AZ 86046.

• AmeriCorps Slot Classification: 1700 Hours

Purpose:

This is an AmeriCorps position with Arizona Conservation Corps (AZCC), which is an AmeriCorps program of Conservation Legacy. The member selected for this position will be serving with Kaibab National Forest as an AmeriCorps member with Arizona Conservation Corps, and completing service projects with Kaibab National Forest.

AZCC aims to continue the legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930's, and is focused on connecting youth, young adults, and recent era military veterans with communities and conservation service projects on public lands. AZCC operates programs across Arizona that engage individuals and strengthen communities through service and conservation. AZCC has program offices in Flagstaff, Phoenix, and Tucson.

Kaibab National Forest:

The Kaibab National Forest is one of six national forests in Arizona. It covers 1.6 million acres and is broken into three geographically separate ranger districts: the North Kaibab Ranger District lies north of Grand Canyon National Park, the Tusayan Ranger District is south of Grand Canyon National Park, and the Williams Ranger District is southernmost, separated from the Tusayan Ranger District by private and Arizona State lands. From the high-elevation lands of the Kaibab Plateau on the North Kaibab Ranger District to the rolling hills and open country of the Tusayan Ranger District, to the scattered cinder cones and canyons of the Williams Ranger District, the Kaibab NF includes wide variations in landscape, vegetation, and wildlife. Because of this, the Kaibab provides unique resources and recreation opportunities that attract a wide spectrum of forest users.

Description of Duties:

The Reforestation Program, a section under the Forest Service’s Silviculture program, focuses directly on caring for the land by ensuring appropriate forest cover is established after disturbances such as wildfire.

This position will focus on providing coordination and oversight for reforestation implementation that will enhance the quality of recreation opportunities and increase forest cover for the many wildfire impacted areas of the Kaibab National Forest that need reforesting. Intelligent reforestation is far more than simple planting trees. It requires assessing forest cover, evaluating the potential for natural regeneration, determining the specific needs to aid forest recovery, planning reforestation activities, implementing planting projects with large crews, and carrying out administrative roles necessary to support those tasks. To achieve this goal the Reforestation Coordinator will undertake these activities directly and provide leadership and supervision to in-house staff and third party partners to carry out those duties.

The Reforestation Coordinator will participate as an active member of the Reforestation Team to provide supervision, leadership, and training to staff, affiliates, and volunteers working with and for the recreation and reforestation programs. The Reforestation Coordinator will work with a broad spectrum of the public, help to increase awareness of the growing acreage being affected by wildfire, communicate a need to assist recovery through both active and passive rehabilitation projects, help promote public engagement and in-house expertise, increase replanted acreage to meet Forest and Regional targets, and improve recreation potential in burn areas.

In addition to the primary duties within the Silviculture/ Recreation Programs, the position will provide opportunities to engage with several other Forest departments. This will include collaborating with Timber and Forest Management, NEPA, Fire, Wildlife, and Botany. This exposure will offer opportunities to explore careers with a range of professionals across an array of skillsets and employment paths.

Essential Responsibilities and Functions:

• Coordinate Reforestation Activities.
• Conduct post-disturbance reforestation assessments to determine certification of natural regeneration and identify areas and specific reforestation needs.
• Coordinate cone surveys and assist with cone collection.
• Coordinate with partners, volunteers, schools, and other entities related to the reforestation program.
• Help ensure survival surveys are conducted in a timely manner and data is recorded.
• Create a culture of workplace safety.
• Obtain and complete trainings as needed to carry out responsibilities.
• Assist with entering reforestation activities into the FACTS database.
• Assist in updating and maintaining the 5-year plan for the forest reforestation program.
• Assist the district staff with contract preparation to support site preparation and planting implementation.
• Oversee agreements and partner involvement related to reforestation projects.
• Communicate reforestation needs, important literature, and potential opportunities to the Forest and Regional Offices to advance the program.
• Coordinate with multiple departments within the district, Forest, Region, as well as with external agencies and affiliates to ensure best practices in reforestation are implemented and shared.
• Provide leadership, training, and mentoring to FS staff, third-party crews, and volunteers in a variety of necessary tasks to plan and implement reforestation.
• Work with partners both on a formal and informal level to advance the goals of the reforestation section.

Qualifications:

• United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien.
• At least 18 years of age.
• Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of elementary or secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant, and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award.
• Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license with 3 year driving history required (or be over 21 if license held for less than 3 years).
• Ability to work independently in field.
• Three field seasons of forestry work.
• Natural Resource-related degree.
• Experience as a crew lead and office personnel supervision.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Direct experience in reforestation: planting, survival surveys, site prep, nursery work.
• Natural Resources Project management.
• Experience working with diverse groups of people; volunteers, tribal members, co-workers, contractors, and partners.
• Experience evaluating post disturbance conditions for reforestation and restoration.
• Contract preparation and administration.
• Graduate level degree in Forestry, Natural Resources, or Plant Ecology.
• Experience in field investigation (establishing plots, analyzing data, and interpreting statistical results).

Time Requirements:

Typically, this position is expected to serve Monday – Friday, 40 hours per week, but exact service schedules may vary. A half hour lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service.

Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.

Orientation and Training:

Member will receive an Arizona Conservation Corps Individual Placement Program New Member Orientation at start of service that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.

Evaluation and Reporting:

As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service. Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
