Job Summary

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Performs molecular biology experiments under the direction of the Principal Investigator (PI) in the laboratory.
  • Conducts technical aspects of research studies, including: polymerase chain reaction (PCR), mouse handling, sacrifice, dissection, and maintenance of a mouse colony; cell culture.
  • Maintains and orders lab supplies.
  • Maintains a lab notebook.
  • Performs tissue culture techniques necessary for in vitro experimentation.
  • Performs molecular biology techniques.
  • Oversees the ordering and maintenance of laboratory supplies.
  • Maintains laboratory supply database.
  • Oversees the disposal of biological waste.
  • Maintains safety records.
  • Supervises the set-up and maintenance of standard and/or specialized apparatus or laboratory equipment.
  • Performs other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

General Responsibilities

  • Performs a wide variety of complex experiments and reports results.
  • Keeps organized analytical data of performed experiments.
  • Provides support for equipment maintenance as needed.
  • Acts as a liaison to students and laboratory personnel for training.
  • Maintains laboratory supply requisition and management.
  • May train junior-level staff.
  • May help plan experiments or short-term goals.

Qualifications

Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education.

EDUCATION

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in science or a related field (Biology, microbiology, biochemistry, or a closely related field preferred).

WORK EXPERIENCE

Preferred

  • Prior lab experience.

Working Conditions / Demands

The role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the work environment and to position oneself to operate laboratory equipment effectively. The role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

The person in this role will utilize basic science lab equipment.
