Safety Education Officer

Job Description

Under the general supervision of the Assistant City Manager, the Safety Education Officer plans, coordinates and executes public safety programs which include: crime prevention, community outreach and engagement, school safety, and special events; and performs related work as required.

Typical Duties Performed

  • Plans, organizes, and implements public safety programs and events.
  • Coordinates the Neighborhood Watch and Business Watch Programs.
  • Coordinates special events and activities including National Night Out, Red Ribbon Week, Public Safety Poster Contest, and the Holiday Home Decorating Contest.
  • Conducts community outreach to businesses and community organizations for delivery of crime prevention and community enhancement programs.
  • Prepares and presents oral presentations before special interest and citizen groups to disseminate information, answer questions, and generate support for public safety programs.
  • Prepares and maintains informational documents and reports on neighborhood outreach activities, progress, and results.
  • Assists in the marketing of public safety programs and activities.
  • Coordinates participation and necessary assistance from other City Departments, partner agencies, schools, and community organizations.
  • Plans, organizes, prepares, and manages public information, including social media, and special awareness projects and events to promote public safety programs.
  • May work outside of a normal work schedule to include nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

The incumbent in this position will be an employee of the City of La Mirada and will not be a sworn officer with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of: Municipal government operations and functions, particularly as it relates to public safety; techniques to implement programs and event planning; complaint resolution techniques; principles of effective oral communication and report writing; public relations principles and practices; marketing and promotion of activities; and general office procedures.
Ability to: Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing; plan, organize, and implement public safety programs; train, meet, and communicate effectively with community members and residents; establish and maintain cooperative work relationships with peers, officials, and members of the public; exercise initiative and make sound decisions in accordance with established regulations and work independently, without immediate supervision.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:
Any combination of education and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities, as qualifying. A typical example would be at least two years of college coursework from an accredited college or university in criminal justice, public administration, special event management, or related filed working toward earning a Bachelor’s Degree and two years of experience administering neighborhood/community programs or events that include substantial public contact and public presentations. A Bachelor’s degree is desirable.

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE:

Possession of a valid California Class C driver license without suspensions prior to and throughout employment is required.

Supplemental Information

Appointments are normally made at the first step of the salary range. Consideration and approval for a salary higher than the first step is done on a case-by-case basis.

SELECTION PROCESS:

The selection process may include any or all of the following: oral interview(s), a written or practical examination, a skills test, and an assessment center examination. The selection process may be changed as deemed necessary by the City Human Resources Office.

Candidates will be required to pass a City administered pre-employment requirements to include live scan fingerprinting and a medical examination as part of the Selection Process. Candidates who do not pass any portion of the above processes will be disqualified and removed from proceeding in the selection process.
