Scenic Carpenter / Fabricator

JOB SUMMARY

Construct scenic elements for corporate events, theatrical productions, and permanent installations. Interpret design blueprints/specifications to assemble scenic pieces using a variety of materials and construction techniques. Safely operate tools, equipment, and safely handle various materials.

REQUIREMENTS

Participate in the construction of scenery to include but not limited to lumber materials, PVC, Acrylics, Carpets, Rigging materials, Velcro, and Fabric as needed.

  • Knowledge of wood construction, fabrication techniques (glues,hardware,wood types, etc)
  • Self-starting, reading blueprints and technical drawings.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Preferred at least 2 years’ experience in a scenic shop, either professionally or 3 years at the college equivalent.
  • Excellent personal, organizational, time management and positive communication skills.
  • Well-established skills in adapting quickly to varying projects and problems.
  • Must Be able to climb and work on a ladder
  • Must be able to lift/ carry 50 pounds
  • Must be able to be on your feel for extended periods of time
  • Must have driver’s license and clean driving record. Owning a car is preferred.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including serving on load-in/out crews if necessary, and/or maintenance projects related to the scene shop operations.
  • Knowledge of Common Carpentry Techniques
  • Safe operation of power tools, wood tools, and management of the tool area.
  • Some basic scenic painting, as needed.
  • Some scenic wrapping for shipping and other prep work, as needed.
  • Flexibility (plan for changes – designers/clients tend to change their minds frequently.
  • Timeliness: scenery needs to be ready to load on trucks to reach their destination in time.
  • Strong attention to detail and craftsmanship.
  • Shop Math (feet-inches-fractions of inch, metric conversions (occasionally)
  • Strong understanding of typical stock material sizes, etc.
  • Safe operation of equipment (saws, drills/drivers, pneumatics (staplers, nailers/grinders), routers, sanders, etc.)
  • Safe handling of materials (PPE when needed-masks, goggles, gloves etc)-team lifts for heavy items etc.
  • Basic CAD / Vectorworks skills preferred but not required.
  • CNC Operation experience is a plus.
