A scrub nurse is a specialized perioperative professional who prepares the sterile field, ensures equipment functionality, and directly assists surgeons by passing instruments during procedures. Key responsibilities include maintaining strict aseptic techniques, anticipating surgeon needs, performing counts of sponges and instruments, and prioritizing patient safety before, during, and after surgery. Key Roles and Responsibilities:
- Pre-Operative Preparation:
- Sets up the sterile field, including instrument tables, drapes, and supplies.
- Ensures all equipment is functioning correctly and is sterile.
- Confirms patient identity, surgical site, and reviews patient history.
- Intra-Operative Assistance:
- Maintains a strict sterile environment (aseptic technique) throughout the procedure.
- Passes instruments, sutures, and sponges to the surgeon and assistant surgeons.
- Anticipates the needs of the surgeon to ensure a smooth, efficient operation.
- Monitors patient safety within the sterile field.
- Handles specimens as instructed.
- Post-Operative Duties:
- Performs final, meticulous counts of sponges, needles, and instruments with the circulating nurse to prevent foreign object retention.
- Cleans and prepares instruments for sterilization.
- Assists in moving the patient to the recovery room.
Essential Skills:
- Extensive knowledge of surgical instruments and procedures.
- High attention to detail and ability to work under pressure.
- Strong communication and teamwork with the surgical team
