The Appellate Division at the United States Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia has primary responsibility for the direct appeals of criminal convictions in the District of Columbia Court of Appeals and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.
 
Job Description
 
The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia is unique in the size and the scope of its work. It serves as both the local and the federal prosecutor for the nation's capital. On the local side, AUSAs assigned to the Superior Court Division prosecute cases in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia ranging from misdemeanors to homicides, and appeals of those convictions are argued in the District of Columbia Court of Appeals (DCCA). On the federal side, AUSAs assigned to the Criminal Division prosecute federal crimes in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, and appeals of those convictions are argued in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. AUSAs assigned to the Appellate Division argue the direct appeals of all criminal convictions in both the local and federal Courts of Appeal. AUSAs in the Special Proceedings Division handle post-trial litigation involving habeas claims, record sealing, and other requests for extraordinary relief in the trial courts. The Civil Division further defends the United States in civil suits brought in the District of Columbia.
 
The United States Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia is accepting applications for attorneys to serve as Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) in the Office's Appellate Division. The position involves significant legal writing responsibilities, including preparation of internal memoranda, briefs for trial courts and the courts of appeals, and other court filings. Appellate AUSAs will participate in moot courts and handle oral arguments before the appellate courts. Appellate AUSAs may also assist in trial-level litigation in cases of unusual complexity or importance.
 
AUSAs must possess the qualities necessary to excel in their mission to enforce the laws of the District of Columbia and the United States. These qualities include advocacy and communication skills; superior writing and analytical skills; the ability to manage a high-volume docket; and dedication to duty. Successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to work in a supportive and professional manner with other attorneys, support staff, investigative agencies, witnesses, and crime victims. They must also demonstrate their willingness to meet the high ethical standards expected of prosecutors in their interactions with opposing counsel and the courts.
 
Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Qualifications
 
Required Qualifications: 
Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree (or equivalent), be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction), and have at least 1 year post-J.D. (or equivalent) legal or other relevant experience.
 
You must be a United States Citizen or National.
 
Preferred Qualifications: 
The ideal candidate will have a minimum GPA of 3.0, appellate litigation experience and/or substantive expertise in criminal law. Judicial clerkships, law review, moot court, clinical experience, and experience working cooperatively with a range of people are also preferred.

Salary
 
Salary Information: This is an excepted service attorney appointment under an Administrative Determined pay scale. Assistant United States Attorney's pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number of years of professional attorney experience. The range of basic pay is $84,601 to $195,100 which includes 33.94% locality pay. About the Position: 
The position supports the mission by providing subject matter expertise regarding firearm eligibility laws, conducting training for Division, WSP and non-WSP personnel statewide and nationally, independently managing multiple programs with statewide and/or national impact, performing quality assurance on record entries, providing analysis and assessing impact for statutory changes, and making independent determinations of firearm eligibility after review of documents and statutes that are unclear, confusing, or in conflict. This position is evaluated by the Management Analyst 5 (Unit Supervisor), but operationally it is independent and interfaces primarily with the Division Commander and Assistant Commander, as well as non-WSP stakeholders, including executive level agency leaders. 
 
About the Division: 
The Firearms Background Division (FBD) is comprised of three sections: Research: In-State (RIS), Research: Out-of-State (ROS), and Quality Assurance and Training Unit (QATU). 
FBD provides firearm eligibility background check services to Federal Firearms Licensees (FFLs), WSP and non-WSP evidence officers releasing a firearm from evidence or safekeeping, and Prosecuting Attorneys Offices for Restoration of Firearm Rights petitions, as well as entering qualifying court orders prohibiting firearm possession into the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) Indices. 
The Secure Automated Firearms E-Check (SAFE) system is used to process the submissions from FFLs, evidence officers, and prosecutors, providing an efficient and robust platform for FBD Employees to use to make their eligibility determinations. 
The Quality Assurance and Training Unit (QATU) teams are responsible for instructing staff on how to conduct firearm eligibility background checks, continuing education training, certifying firearm safety training programs, quality assurance, senior level analysis and recommendations to management, recordkeeping and reporting, and managing accounts receivable for fees remitted to the State Firearms Background Check account. This position is located in the QATU section.

Maintains and leverages a broad knowledge of Microsoft's product landscape, solutions, and strategy to address customer's needs. Proactively coordinates with internal and external network of industry experts (e.g., Regional and Global Experts, industry-specific partners) to build strong knowledge of the industry and the competitive landscape. Leverages deep understanding of their customers to share knowledge with virtual team and promote customer business perspectives.
Acts as the voice of the customer and internal advocate by providing insights, feedback, and challenges from the customer to internal teams (e.g., product groups, engineers) across all levels of the organization. Drives action to ensure that internal teams understand and respond to insights. Escalates pressing issues for customers to Microsoft internal stakeholders (e.g., Headquarters) to facilitate the appropriate solutions and capabilities for the customer.
Provides Account thought leadership inclusive of information technology (IT), business strategy knowledge, and technology landscape, and shares best practices internally while providing coaching to subsidiary resources. Leverages account thought leadership in partnership with account executives to set strategy, own accountability for outcomes, and lead extended teams. Provides technical guidance to internal teams to position technology while using customer landscape knowledge. Creates connections and feedback loops with Product and Engineering teams.
Creates security thought leadership with the customer's executives (e.g., technical decision maker [TDM]/business decision maker [BDM]) using the Microsoft Security and Zero Trust narratives and engages TDM and BDM stakeholders to position security as a business enabler and instill a security mindset in all aspects of the customer's technology landscape. Uses their understanding of the customers' technology and security needs to establish Microsoft&rsquo;s security credentials and to build opportunities to improve the customer's security posture and orchestrates execution through security specialists.

Strategic Account Technology IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $130,900 - $251,900 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $165,600 - $272,300 per year.

Organization
 
The Civil Rights Division is primarily responsible for enforcing federal statutes, constitutional provisions, and executive orders that prohibit, among other things, unlawful discrimination in education, employment, housing, police services, public accommodations and facilities, voting, and federally funded and conducted programs. The laws that the Division enforces also prohibit conduct by law enforcement agencies, as well as conditions of public residential institutions, such as health care and correctional facilities, that violate the constitution.
 
As the Deputy Assistant Attorney General (DAAG), the successful candidate:
 
Serves as consultant and advisor on all matters of major policies requiring the personal attention of the Assistant Attorney General (AAG).
 Reviews and supervises the work of one or more CRT sections and meets regularly with section managers to communicate the enforcement and policy priorities of the AAG and to ensure that each section's work aligns with those priorities.
 Advises on and decides questions of policy and procedure arising in connection with the initiation, conduct, and termination of civil rights litigation, both civil and criminal, subject to review by the AAG.
 Confers with, advises, and instructs senior members of CRT, special counsel, and other Division and Department attorneys on matters relating to the enforcement of statutes, constitutional provisions, executive orders, and other regulations assigned to CRT.
 
The DAAG Is expected to conceive and formulate policies and programs for elimination of unlawful practices of discrimination involving federally protected civil rights, anticipating, minimizing, or obviating wherever possible apparent federal and state conflicts with respect to enforcement of civil rights. In emergencies, conducts field surveys and inspection trips to troublesome areas in civil rights matters for the purpose of advising and aiding the AAG in the formulation of departmental policy and determining when the Department must take prosecutory or other corrective action.
 
Drafts, reviews, and comments on the Department's legislative program on civil rights, with a view to determining their adequacy under the Constitution and the need of such legislation in the enforcement of federally protected civil rights.
 
Confers with individuals and groups who call upon the Department in connection with civil rights matters, advises such individuals and groups thereon, and initiates appropriate action.
 
Acts as liaison and representative of the AAG with the Commission on Civil Rights and other agencies of the Government and with private and semi-private organizations and educational institutions regarding civil right matters.
