This is an open and continuous recruitment that will be used to fill multiple positions over the next few months. Interviews will be conducted on a rolling basis, and the post will remain up until open positions have been filled.</b></p><p><br>
<b>The initial assignment (rotation) for these positions will be at the Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent. Deputy Prosecuting Attorneys (DPAs) cover work at courthouses in Seattle, Kent and Redmond. All deputies are expected to be able to work at any of those locations.</b></p><p>
Attorneys hired into these roles are primarily assigned to work in our District Court Unit handling gross misdemeanor cases. As a new deputy, you will have the opportunity to develop your skills as a trial lawyer, negotiator, and to internalize the mission of our office, which is not just to win cases, but to serve the cause of justice. We are an office that relies on data to enhance and measure performance, allocate resources where they are most needed, and identify opportunities and challenges, while implementing efficiencies. You will have a large and meaningful caseload, exercise your best judgment and discretion, and join a community of Deputy Prosecuting Attorneys and Legal Service Professionals committed to integrity, excellence, and mutual support.</p><p>
General work hours are 8:00am - 5:00pm, with court hours being 8:30am - 4:30pm. Occasional weekend or holiday calendar coverage is required. Other potential work assignments include:</p>

Term-Limited DPA contracts last 12 months (with the possibility of extension) and enjoy the same robust benefits package as non-contract employees. These positions are primarily in-person with some ability to telecommute each week as business needs allow, subject to a telecommuting agreement. Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.<div><b><br>
Salary:</b> Some candidates may have the opportunity to start work after taking the bar exam and prior to passing the bar. Those candidates will be paid $3,339.82 bi-weekly. The salary will be $3,568.08 bi-weekly and $92,770 annually after being sworn is as a member of the Washington State bar. <b>Note</b>: These are 2026 rates.<br>

Job Description
<br><br>
The Criminal Division is responsible for investigating and prosecuting criminal cases in the U.S. District Court. Located in the nation's capitol. The division has jurisdiction for a broad range of consequential cases, including violent crime, child exploitation, human trafficking, drug trafficking, fraud, government corruption, cybercrime, terrorism, sanctions violations, espionage, and other threats to D.C. and the nation.
<br><br>
The Criminal Division is accepting applications for attorneys to serve as line and supervisory AUSAs in the Criminal Division.
<br><br>
The Asset Forfeiture Unit utilizes criminal, civil, and administrative tools to punish and deter criminal activity by depriving criminals of property used in or acquired through illegal activities and to recover assets that may be used to compensate victims. The caseload involves matters across all criminal sections, whether in partnership with a criminal AUSA or as an independent matter.
<br><br>
The Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking (CEHT) section handles a broad range of matters related to internet-based crimes against children as well as human trafficking prosecutions. CEHT primarily investigates cases involving the production of and trafficking in child pornography, commercial sex trafficking, labor trafficking, and interstate domestic violence and stalking offenses. CEHT AUSAs are often involved in interviewing victims of sexual abuse or trafficking, coordinating with law enforcement agents to charge and arrest targets, and drafting search warrants for electronic evidence.
<br><br>
The Federal Major Crimes (FMC) section prosecutes a range of federal crimes, with a focus on high-tempo arrest-driven prosecutions or reactive investigations. FMC prosecutes the prohibited possession of firearms and controlled substances, violent crime sprees and crews, robberies, destruction of government property, and other federal crimes in the District of Columbia. As their experience increases, FMC AUSAs have the opportunity to partner with and support AUSAs in other sections in the Criminal Division.
<br><br>
The Fraud, Public Corruption, and Civil Rights (FPCCR) section handles complex and challenging prosecutions intended to address a range of white-collar crimes. FPCCR prosecutes fraud offenses against government agencies, including health-care fraud, tax fraud, and federal program fraud; frauds targeting businesses, non-profits, and social institutions; money laundering networks perpetrating frauds against financial institutions and online through cryptocurrencies; and cyber-enabled frauds (such as ransomware) and crimes (such as hacking to steal funds/crypto and information). FPCCR prosecutes public corruption offenses, such as bribery; conflicts of interest; theft of government funds; election crimes; and efforts to obstruct or interfere with the lawful functioning of Congress, the Judiciary, and Executive Branch. This section also prosecutes civil rights offenses, such as crimes based on protected characteristics.
<br><br>
The National Security (NS) section investigates and prosecutes criminal activity that threatens our nation's security, including: international and domestic terrorism; hostage-takings and other violence against Americans outside the U.S.; export control and sanctions violations; espionage, malign foreign influence, and transnational repression; unauthorized retention or disclosure of classified information and national defense information; and cyber offenses targeted at the U.S. government or perpetrated by those connected to state actors or terrorist organizations. The section is looking for applicants who are willing and able to handle the breadth of the section's practice; particular preference will be given to those applicants who have demonstrated an interest and skill in investigations involving cryptocurrency, cyber crimes, or criminal or civil forfeiture.
<br><br>
The Violent Crime and Narcotic Trafficking (VCNT) section disrupts and dismantles criminal networks engaged in serious violence and large-scale firearms and drug trafficking. VCNT places an emphasis on proactive, intelligence-driven, long- and medium-term criminal investigations, and our prosecutions focus on violent street crews, transnational criminal organizations, and the district's drivers of violence. VCNT's prosecutions target everything from criminal street gangs to international drug cartels engaged in a broad range of federal offenses, including firearms and narcotics conspiracies, interstate robbery conspiracies, RICO and VICAR, darknet market drug trafficking and money laundering, and Continuing Criminal Enterprises. VCNT AUSAs advise and coordinate with law enforcement agencies on investigative steps and sequencing; draft search warrants and other legal process; present cases to the federal grand jury; brief and handle detention hearings and other hearings in court; and prosecute cases through trial.

The United States Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia is accepting applications for attorneys to serve as Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) in the Office's Superior Court Division. The Superior Court Division is the largest division in the Office. It has primary responsibility for the prosecution of criminal cases in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, and handles the highest volume of felony and misdemeanor cases prosecuted by the Office. The Criminal Division, U.S. Department of Justice is seeking qualified, experienced trial attorneys in the Capital Case Section (CCS) located in Washington, DC.
<br><br>
<b>As a Trial Attorney, the incumbent:</b><br>
Conducts analysis of new cases received from the United States Attorneys' Offices and Department components charging a crime punishable by death. Section attorneys advise the Attorney General's Capital Case Review Committee in its factual and legal evaluation of cases submitted for the Department's decision whether to authorize a capital prosecution.
<br>Litigates all phases of federal capital cases, including pre-trial litigation, selecting death qualified juries, preparing/presenting penalty phase witnesses and evidence, and post-conviction briefing and hearings.
<br>Provides training on the Department's capital case litigation. Section attorneys provide legal, procedural, and policy guidance to United States Attorneys' Offices and Department components handling capital investigations and prosecutions.
<br>In collaboration with United States Attorneys' Offices, Section attorneys advise in the preparation of legal memoranda, such as proposed legislation, amendments, regulations, testimony, briefing materials, public statements, and correspondence on capital punishment issues.
<br>Collects and maintains trial and appellate materials related to federal capital prosecutions. Section attorneys partner with United States Attorneys' Offices in the development and management of current information and materials which act as a resources center for capital prosecutors.
<br>Assists in the development of Department policies and procedures related to federal capital prosecutions.
<br>Qualifications
<br><br>
<b>Required Qualifications:</b> Interested applicants must possess a J.D., or equivalent, degree, be duly licensed and authorized to practice as an attorney under the laws of any State, territory of the United States, or the District of Columbia, and be an active member of the bar in good standing. To qualify at the GS-15 grade level, applicants must have at least four (4) years post J.D. legal experience, one of which was specialized experience at, or equivalent to, the GS-14 grade level. Examples of specialized experience include: independently performing legal analysis; composing pleadings, briefs and other court documents involving unique and/or difficult legal issues in civil or criminal litigation; conducting highly complex civil or criminal litigation; and leading paralegals and support staff.

<b>Preferred Qualifications:</b><br>
Experience in supporting, litigating, and supervising criminal cases in federal or state courts;
