Secretary to the Highway Superintendent

Town of Hurley Highway Department

Full-Time | $21.00 per hour | Union Position

The Town of Hurley is seeking a reliable, organized, and detail-oriented individual to serve as Secretary to the Highway Superintendent. This is a full-time administrative position providing confidential clerical, payroll, and bookkeeping support to the Highway Department.

This position is classified as Civil Service Exempt.

Schedule: Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week

Position Summary

The Secretary to the Highway Superintendent performs responsible administrative and clerical work in support of Highway Department operations. The position requires strong computer skills, discretion, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple responsibilities in a municipal office environment.

Duties Include (but are not limited to):

  • Prepare and process vouchers, invoices, and accounts payable
  • Assist with departmental budget tracking and expenditure monitoring
  • Process payroll and maintain employee timekeeping records
  • Maintain personnel and benefit-related documentation
  • Prepare correspondence, reports, and official documents
  • Track and record operational data such as fuel usage and snow/ice control activities
  • Maintain inventory and equipment records
  • Serve as a point of contact for the public and other Town departments
  • Answer phones and respond to inquiries and complaints
  • Maintain confidential files and records
  • Perform general clerical duties including data entry, filing, scanning, and record management

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Administrative or clerical experience preferred
  • Payroll processing or bookkeeping experience strongly preferred
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) required
  • Ability to learn municipal software systems
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the public and Town staff
  • Possession of a valid New York State driver’s license

Additional Information

Preference may be given to Town of Hurley residents, though residency is not required.
