Section Manager - Environmental & Regulatory Compliance (Chicago)

Description The Environmental & Regulatory Compliance (ERC) Section Manager is responsible for the supervision, training, and direction of ERC staff in Burns & McDonnell’s Northeast Region. Along with the duties below, this position will continue to include technical ERC assignments.

Specific areas of responsibility include the following, with other duties as assigned by ERC department management and senior management:

  • Advocate for safety in the department.
  • Drive a culture of quality and continual improvement.
  • Provide overall leadership to the team through strong communication, empowerment, delegation and servant leadership.
  • Foster a healthy and vibrant employee-owner culture within the team by leveraging sound team-building practices, promoting and administering effective conflict resolution, promoting an ownership mentality, promoting a healthy work-life balance, and engaging in community activities.
  • Recruit candidates that align with MacCulture principles, department needs, growth strategies and business objectives.
  • Advocate for staff by meeting regularly, listening to their short- and long-term goals and providing guidance, direction, and facilitation of opportunities to meet those goals.
  • Build strong partnerships with Great Lakes and other regional office teams.
  • Review and conduct employee performance (90-day and annual performance appraisals, coaching sessions, etc.) to ensure the efficient, cost-effective utilization of staff.
  • Identify the department's training needs and support/develop training programs. Collaborate with other departments on shared training.
  • Assist the Project Execution team and Department Manager in developing business initiatives to improve profitability and/or efficiencies.
  • Advance and develop Department tools and workflows to increase the efficiency of designs, specification development, and project execution.
  • Collaborate with business development managers, the Project Execution Manager, project managers, and proposal support staff on ERC proposals to secure work for staff.
  • Interpret policies, purposes, and goals of the organization to staff.
  • Serve as the ERC technical advisor, provide input and evaluation on ERC projects.
  • Demonstrate creativity, foresight and mature judgment in anticipating and solving problems.
  • Determine departmental objectives and requirements and develop standards and guidelines.
  • Assist ERC Department Management by providing recommendations on changes in the basic structure and organization of the department to ensure the effective fulfillment of assigned objectives.
  • Approve timecards and ensure billable time goals are met.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental-related sciences, geology, soils, vegetation management, environmental studies, business administration or similar business discipline from an accredited program.
  • Minimum of 5 years related professional experience on ERC projects across all service lines is required. Prior experience managing staff is preferred.
  • Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills; strong interpersonal skills; and the ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients.
  • Position requires the ability to thoughtfully and positively influence, lead, and manage change.
  • History of high performance as demonstrated and documented in the Burns & McDonnell performance management system.
  • Candidates must possess strong public relations skills and a strategic perspective.

Compensation

$100,000.00-250,000.00 Yearly

The expected compensation range for this position is displayed in compliance with all local/state regulations. The expected compensation range for this position is based on a number of factors, including but not limited to: individual education, qualifications, prior work experience and work location. The total annual compensation package will consist of a base salary and eligibility to participate in our discretionary year-end incentive bonus program.
