Job Summary/Basic Function

About the position:


The candidate selected for this position will perform a broad range of general accounting duties in higher education; including the coordination of financial accounting information, assist in financial statement preparation, performing general ledger account maintenance and reconciliation, completing various financial reports, accounting for various funds, monitoring internal controls to safeguard resources, and developing and enhancing accounting reports.

Duties and Responsibilities
System Maintenance and Monitoring:
  • Maintain and monitor accounting systems and system balances.
  • Assist in resolving system issues as they arise.
  • Support the implementation and maintenance of applicable accounting software.


Daily Accounting Functions
  • Perform daily accounting tasks, including calculating and preparing transactions and reconciling accounts.
  • Responsible for all fixed asset accounting
  • Maintain all capital project records within the systems including Key ’93 funds and annual reporting
  • Oversee and maintain all lease accounting in compliance with GASB and within systems
  • Monitor and transfer student activity fees collected on behalf of SGA to SSI
  • Reconcile bank statements and investment accounts for the University.
    • Maintain oversight of cash posting by other team members
  • Maintain accurate accounting records in compliance with GAAP for Higher Education.

Financial Reporting and Compliance
  • Develop and prepare various financial reports for internal and external users.
  • Assist in preparing University financial statements in accordance with GASB formats and standards.
  • Ensure University compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and institutional policies.
  • Assist in reviewing internal controls to enhance financial integrity.

Auditing and Internal Controls
  • Perform and review substantive and compliance testing, including:
    • Reconciliation of various accounts.
    • Review of transaction inputs.
    • Verification of accounts payable disbursements and payee coding.
  • Assist in conducting internal audit tests and preparing audit reports.
  • Support the preparation, monitoring, and execution of internal and external audit schedules.
  • Serve as a liaison with external auditors during their University engagement.

Supervision and Leadership
  • Assume the accounting duties of the Director in their absence.

Other Responsibilities
  • Bond Accounting – reviewing and double checking PASSHE’s automated entries to ensure they match the statements
  • ½ of 1% Chancellors Share calculation and reconciliation
  • UBIT tax reporting for filing.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Business Administration with accounting emphasis.
  • Five years of experience in accounting.
  • Technical knowledge of and experience with accounting software.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills.
  • Excellent oral, written, interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office including Excel, Word and Outlook
  • Commitment to inclusive practices and working with diverse student populations.
  • Successful interview.
  • Successful completion of three background checks.

Preferred Qualifications
  • One year of supervisory experience.
  • Experience with fund accounting.
  • Experience with grant accounting
  • Experience in higher education.
  • Experience with SAP, Banner, Argos, Hyperion, Business Intelligence for SAP reporting.
