Job Summary
The Senior Accountant is responsible for supporting the full cycle of accounting operations including accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing, reconciliations, project/job costing, and month-end close. This role works closely with operations, production, and leadership teams to ensure accurate financial tracking and reporting across projects.
The ideal candidate will have strong experience in project accounting, job costing, and financial analysis within a project-based environment. This position plays a key role in monitoring project costs, analyzing profitability, and supporting operational teams with financial data that drives decision-making.
What You Will Do
Accounting Operations
- Support month-end close activities, including journal entries, reconciliations, and financial reporting
- Manage and support accounts payable and accounts receivable processes
- Assist with customer billing, progress billing, and invoice review
- Perform monthly account reconciliations and investigate discrepancies
- Maintain accurate financial documentation and support audits or financial reviews
Project Accounting & Job Costing
- Assist with project/job setup in the accounting system to ensure accurate cost tracking
- Monitor job costs, production expenses, and project profitability
- Analyze project budgets and identify cost overruns or cost savings opportunities
- Provide project managers and operations teams with financial data and reports to support project management
Work-in-Progress (WIP) & Financial Analysis
- Assist with Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting to track project progress and revenue recognition
- Perform monthly variance analysis comparing actual results to budgets or forecasts
- Track gross margins and project profitability, identifying trends and areas for improvement
- Support leadership with financial insights related to operational performance and cost control
Operational & Cost Analysis
- Analyze equipment usage, rental costs, and operational expenses to support cost efficiency
- Assist with capital expenditure analysis and equipment investment decisions
- Track vendor agreements, leases, and related financial commitments
- Review contracts, purchase orders, and master service agreements to ensure proper billing and financial tracking
Compliance & Documentation
- Review and process lien waivers and releases when applicable
- Ensure accounting procedures and financial documentation follow company standards
- Maintain organized financial records and support compliance requirements
What You Need to Succeed
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
- 5+ years of accounting experience with exposure to multiple accounting functions
- Experience with job costing, project accounting, or cost accounting
- Experience in construction, landscape, design-build, or project-based industries strongly preferred
- Strong understanding of financial reporting and general accounting principles
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office applications
- Experience with ERP or accounting software used for project accounting
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
- Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate with accounting, operations, and leadership teams
