Senior Accountant

Location: Colorado (On‑Site or Hybrid)
Employment Type: Full‑Time
FLSA Status: Exempt
Salary Range: $75,000 – $105,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications

About the Role

We are seeking a Senior Accountant to own several complex and highly impactful accounting areas, including accrued commissions, inventory accounting, prepaid expenses, and multi‑state sales tax. This role is expected to operate with a high degree of independence and sound judgment, playing a key role in month‑end close, balance‑sheet integrity, and audit readiness.

This position is ideal for an experienced accountant who has hands‑on ownership of reconciliations and accruals, is comfortable navigating ambiguity, and enjoys partnering with Sales, Operations, and Finance to ensure accurate financial reporting.

Key Responsibilities

Commission Accruals & Incentive Accounting

  • Own the preparation and ongoing maintenance of accrued commission schedules.
  • Reconcile commissions payable to underlying sales, invoicing, margin, and payout data.
  • Identify, research, and resolve discrepancies independently.
  • Support changes to commission structures and provide ad‑hoc analysis as needed.

Prepaid Expenses

  • Record, track, and amortize prepaid expenses in accordance with company policy.
  • Ensure prepaid balances are accurate and current at each month‑end close.
  • Partner with AP and department owners to ensure proper classification at entry.

Inventory Accounting

  • Maintain and reconcile inventory balances, including purchases, usage, and adjustments.
  • Reconcile inventory subledgers to the general ledger.
  • Support accurate cost recognition and margin reporting for resale items.
  • Assist with documentation, controls, and process improvements related to inventory.

Sales Tax Oversight

  • Oversee multi‑state sales and use tax accounting, including review of filings and reconciliations.
  • Ensure correct sales tax treatment across products and services.
  • Coordinate exemption documentation and support sales tax audits or inquiries as needed.

Month‑End Close & Reporting

  • Prepare and review journal entries for assigned areas.
  • Complete balance‑sheet reconciliations and variance analysis.
  • Participate in monthly, quarterly, and year‑end close processes.
  • Support internal and external audits with schedules and documentation.

Process Improvement

  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, controls, and documentation.
  • Maintain compliance with GAAP and internal accounting policies.
  • Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement and accountability.

Experience & Expectations

This role is intended for a senior‑level accountant with direct experience owning balance‑sheet accounts and compliance‑sensitive processes. The successful candidate will be comfortable preparing reconciliations, identifying issues, proposing solutions, and communicating accounting conclusions without close supervision.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including ownership of balance‑sheet reconciliations and accruals.
  • Strong understanding of accrual accounting and GAAP.
  • Advanced Excel skills (reconciliations, schedules, analysis).
  • High attention to detail and ability to manage multiple deadlines.

Preferred

  • CPA or CPA‑eligible.
  • Experience with commission accounting, inventory, and/or sales tax compliance.
  • Exposure to multi‑entity or multi‑state environments.
  • Experience in services, technology, MSP, or resale‑based businesses.
  • Familiarity with QuickBooks or similar general ledger systems.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary Range: $75,000 – $105,000 annually
  • Compensation within the range will be based on experience, depth of ownership over commissions, inventory, and sales tax, and ability to operate independently in a month‑end close environment.
