Position Description

Advertised Job Summary
The Senior Accountant – Accounting Services manages complex financial accounting in the Controller’s Office to include creation and maintenance of accounting records, verification and documentation of financial transactions, preparation of monthly and annual reports, monthly reconciliations, and assistance with reporting functions for the annual financial statements. Manages, leads, and plans Agency Accounts (“Z” Funds) financial activities and accounting to ensure timely billing and funds received. Manages, leads, and plans State Financial Aid accounting for compliance to include but not limited to managing reporting, timely draws to support university cash flow and coordination with the Financial Aid offices. Assist with certain Treasury functions.

Job Related Minimum Required Education and Experience
  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in a job related field and 3 or more years of job related experience, which may be substituted by an equivalent combination of job related certification, training, education, and/or experience.

Required Certification, Licensure/Other Credentials

Preferred Qualifications
  • CPA or CGFO.
  • PeopleSoft or other ERP Experience.
  • Higher Education and audit experience.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • An extensive knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles for higher education.
  • Thorough knowledge of state and federal statutes and regulations pertaining to higher education financial management and ability to analyze and interpret.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of university, state, federal and other external personnel.
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, theories and terminology of accounting, capital financing, debt management, tax, banking, budgeting, financial management or investment.
  • Knowledge of state government fiscal accounting processes.
  • Knowledge of financial statement analysis.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret complex financial data and reports.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.

Manages and directs all financial activities and accounting associated with Agency Funds (‘Z’ Funds) to include but not limited to Foundations, National Advocacy Center (NAC), and other agency funds. Ensure billings are completed timely and funds received timely. Prepare entries to record rents and utilities for the NAC monthly. Ensure collaboration with agency funds personnel to manage these accounts efficiently.

Ensure funds are invoiced timely to support university cash flow. Assist with Treasury functions. Oversee control of the University’s petty cash and change funds to include periodic reconciliations, reimbursements, and custodian changes. Serve as backup for the University’s card programs to include requests, loads, settlements, monitoring of expense reports, and periodic review for compliance. Assist with setup of new endowment accounts, create journal entries to record interest, and periodically review accounts for expenditure compliance.
