Job Title: Senior Accountant – US Construction (General Contractor)

About the Role
Mindwhiz is seeking a highly experienced Senior Accountant with a proven background in US construction accounting, specifically supporting General Contractors. This role will manage advanced project-based accounting functions, including job costing, WIP management, subcontractor billing, retainage tracking, and construction-specific financial reporting for a US-based general contracting firm.
The ideal candidate has deep knowledge of construction financial workflows, 5+ years of relevant US construction accounting experience, and strong command over QuickBooks (Online/Desktop) and Sage 500.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain accurate project-level and company-level financial records for a US-based general contractor.
- Manage full-cycle accounting, including AP, AR, general ledger entries, project expense tracking, and month-end close.
- Prepare Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules, cost-to-complete analysis, job profitability reports, and project financial dashboards.
- Handle construction billing workflows, including Progress Billing, AIA billing, retainage calculation/management, and subcontractor pay applications.
- Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, job costs, payroll allocations, subcontractor expenses, and intercompany transactions.
- Prepare accurate financial statements, including Monthly/Quarterly/Annual P&L, Balance Sheet, and Cash Flow reports.
- Support budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, and cost control for active construction projects.
- Communicate and coordinate with US-based management, contractors, vendors, and auditors regarding project and financial matters.
- Ensure complete documentation and compliance, including W-9s, Certificates of Insurance (COIs), lien waivers, subcontractor agreements, and payment requirements.
- Maintain strong internal controls and ensure adherence to US GAAP, company policies, and industry accounting standards.
Requirements
- 5+ years of hands-on accounting experience in US Construction Accounting (Mandatory).
- Direct experience working with or for a US General Contractor (Required).
- Strong proficiency in QuickBooks Online / Desktop and Sage 500 (Required).
- Expertise in job costing, WIP reporting, construction billing cycles, retainage management, and subcontractor compliance.
- Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, lookups, financial modeling, data analysis).
- Solid understanding of US GAAP, construction project workflows, and cost allocation principles.
- Exceptional attention to detail, analytical ability, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects, deadlines, and high-volume workloads independently.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience supporting a US-based general contracting or specialty contracting company.
- Knowledge of AIA billing procedures, lien waiver processes, subcontractor management, and construction compliance documentation.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for coordinating with US clients and project teams.
