Senior Associate, PE Controllership

Senior Associate, PE Controllership

ROLE DESCRIPTION

Exbo Group is seeking an exceptional accounting professional with deep private equity accounting expertise to join our Controllership practice. This individual will serve as a dedicated financial accounting resource for our current and future portfolio of PE-backed, growth-stage clients — bringing specialized PE accounting knowledge that directly addresses the unique demands of sponsor-owned businesses.

The Senior Associate, PE Controllership will play a critical role in delivering and scaling our controllership services. You will work directly with an experienced team to implement PE-grade accounting best practices, own month-end close activities, and serve as a trusted financial operations resource to multiple clients simultaneously. Over time, you will establish yourself as the go-to accounting leader for your client portfolio, with a clear path to serving as the controller for sponsor-backed companies and, ultimately, managing your own team members.

The ideal candidate has hands-on experience in PE accounting — whether in a portfolio company controllership role, a PE-focused public accounting practice, or in-house at a PE fund — and understands the cadence, reporting expectations, and financial rigor that private equity sponsors require. You bring strong technical GAAP accounting skills, fluency with the close process in a PE environment, and the communication skills to engage credibly with both operators and investors. You thrive in ambiguity, are meticulous about the details, and are energized by working across a diverse set of growing, sponsor-backed businesses. This is an opportunity to join a rapidly growing premier advisory firm with significant upside as we scale.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Own and execute month-end close procedures for PE-backed clients, including balance sheet reconciliations, journal entries, and financial reporting packages aligned with sponsor reporting requirements
  • Manage AR and AP functions, including invoice processing, collections, vendor management, and cash flow visibility — ensuring PE owners have accurate, timely operating data
  • Analyze and reconcile cash and balance sheet accounts; ensure all transactions are accurately documented and properly classified in the client's accounting system
  • Prepare and present client-facing financial materials — including management reporting packages, board-ready financials, and KPI dashboards — tailored to PE sponsor expectations
  • Support PE due diligence processes, including data room preparation, financial statement review, and coordination with transaction advisory teams
  • Support clients through audit engagements including pulling support for requests, coordinating directly with auditors, and advising the client on risk and applicable materiality thresholds.
  • Develop and implement accounting policies and procedures consistent with PE best practices; identify process improvements and control gaps across client portfolios
  • Respond to client and sponsor inquiries accurately and promptly; proactively flag financial issues and recommend solutions
  • Research and resolve accounting discrepancies, applying strong technical GAAP judgment in ambiguous or complex situations
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with CFO Advisory, Transaction Services, and Tax Advisory colleagues to deliver integrated solutions to shared clients
  • Participate in and lead special projects — including system implementations, policy development, and integration support for newly acquired platform companies

KEY QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA license (or active pursuit) strongly preferred
  • 3–5 years of relevant experience with a direct focus on PE accounting — including portfolio company accounting, PE-focused public accounting (audit or advisory), or fund accounting at a private equity firm
  • Demonstrated understanding of PE sponsor reporting requirements: monthly close packages, EBITDA bridge reporting, covenant compliance, and investor-ready financial statements
  • Experience supporting or navigating PE-related transactions, including add-on acquisitions, platform integrations, recapitalizations, or exit processes, is a strong plus
  • Deep knowledge of GAAP with the ability to apply technical standards independently and in complex, multi-entity PE portfolio company environments
  • High attention to detail and exceptional accuracy — PE sponsors expect clean numbers and you are accountable for delivering them
  • Strong critical thinking skills; able to work through ambiguous situations and competing priorities across multiple client engagements simultaneously
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel (advanced); experience with NetSuite, QuickBooks Desktop, QuickBooks Online, or other accounting platforms used in the lower middle market is a plus
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills; able to present financial information clearly to both operational management and financial sponsors
  • Proven ability to manage multiple engagements simultaneously with strong time management, organizational discipline, and professional judgment
  • Genuine enthusiasm for working with a diverse portfolio of PE-backed growth companies at different stages of their investment lifecycle

ABOUT EXBO GROUP

Exbo Group is a team of investment bankers, consultants, and accountants that grew out of a $400M New York based venture capital fund. The fund’s portfolio companies had CEOs with strong visions and operating experience but lacked the technical financial experience to scale. The companies needed a way to off-load the complex administrative burden of running a finance department and interfacing with their investors. After providing accounting and financial assistance for a firm’s successful $10M Series A raise, several other funds and firms began to seek out Exbo Group's assistance. Our team has grown substantially and now provides high-touch financial operations and CFO support to growth-stage companies nationwide from our New York headquarters.
