Senior Electrical & Controls Engineer

Sharpe Engineering & Equipment is seeking an experienced Senior Electrical & Controls Engineer to join our Madison-based team of industry experts serving the food, beverage, and dairy industries. The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in electrical design, automation, and system integration—from concept through start-up and commissioning. This role plays a critical part in delivering reliable, high-performing automation and control solutions for process systems across batching, blending, CIP, pasteurization, and other sanitary applications.

The Senior Electrical & Controls Engineer will lead project design and execution efforts, ensuring technical accuracy, compliance with electrical standards, and client satisfaction. Working collaboratively across engineering disciplines, vendors, contractors, and clients, this individual will drive automation excellence, safety, and innovation in alignment with Sharpe’s reputation for quality and engineering leadership.

Responsibilities

• Lead development and peer review of electrical design packages, including schematics, panel layouts, and interconnection diagrams.
• Design power distribution, motor controls, and machine safety systems for sanitary process environments.
• Develop and implement PLC, HMI, and SCADA programming with emphasis on Rockwell Automation platforms.
• Collaborate with vendors and integrators on system configuration and commissioning activities.
• Generate functional descriptions, I/O documentation, and control narratives to support project execution.
• Ensure compliance with NEC, NFPA 70E, UL 508A, and other applicable electrical codes and safety standards.
• Oversee contractor performance during installation, testing, and start-up to ensure quality, scope, and schedule alignment.
• Support client meetings, design reviews, and field integration for successful project delivery.
• Mentor junior engineers and designers, fostering technical growth and professional development.
• Drive continuous improvement of design standards, tools, and automation practices.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related STEM field (required).
• Minimum 7 years of experience in electrical engineering, industrial automation, and controls integration.
• Proven expertise in Rockwell Automation (PLC/HMI/SCADA) systems.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD Electrical and Microsoft Office tools.
• Strong knowledge of UL, NEC, NFPA 70E, OSHA, and other relevant standards.
• Demonstrated success managing contractors, vendors, and cross-functional project teams.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.
• Valid U.S. driver’s license; ability to travel domestically and internationally if required.

Pay: $90,000.00 - $120,000.00 per year
