DESCRIPTION OF POSITION: Under the direction of the Director of Fiscal Services, the Sr. General Ledger Accountant will perform a variety of advanced technical and analytical duties in the areas of fiscal analysis, and financial management. the Sr. General Ledger Accountant works closely with fiscal administration in the performing of reconciliation functions.


REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

  • Oversee the District student enrollment and attendance accounting. El
  • Compile, reconcile and balance various enrollment and student attendance reports including monthly enrollment, Average Daily Attendance and class size reports, make corrections and monitor reports and related documentation. E
  • Audit and review school site enrollment and attendance records. E
  • Support school site enrollment and student attendance personnel. E
  • Prepare month-end and fiscal year end financial statements and assist with annual audit and ad hoc projects. E
  • Balance the warrant batch and prepare submission documents needed by the County Office of Education; distribute printed warrants to various Accounts Payable Technicians. E
  • Prepare and submit reports and forms as required by local, state, or federal agencies. E
  • Prepare reconciliations for statutory Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) as defined by the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB). E
  • Propose and generate journal entries. E
  • Reconcile, analyze and audit balance sheet accounts to ensure timely and accurate monthly reporting. E
  • Research account discrepancies to resolve issues. E
  • Review general ledger entries to ensure that financial information is accurately reported. E
  • Maintain financial records in accordance with current law. E
  • Perform financial activities related to bank reconciliation, deposit of funds and District investment program. E
  • Support other areas in accounting. E
  • Other related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or higher.
  • 5-7 years general ledger accounting experience with at least 2 years experience in fund accounting in a California Public School District (desirable).

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE of:

  • Principles and procedures of public agency fiscal management.
  • Advanced, professional accounting practices and procedures.
  • Methods and practices of financial record-keeping
  • Office practices and procedures including basic functions of computer operations.


  • Accounting methods and terminology.
  • California Education Code and District directives and policies.
  • Strong working knowledge of Excel, Access, or other relational reporting tools.

SKILLS:

  • Strong reconciliation skills, required.
  • Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary.
  • Positive attitude and ability to work in a team as well as independently.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Detail-oriented with excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills.

ABILITY to:

  • Plan, organize and coordinate a variety of fiscal operations.
  • Analyze, generate, evaluate and implement financial procedures for effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Prepare clear, concise and comprehensive reports and recommendations verbally and in

writing.

  • Demonstrate proficiency in the use of computers including electronic spreadsheet and data base programs.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative professional working relationships with District personnel.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Communicate effectively with District employees and the general public.
  • Excellent attention to detail with good analytical skills.
  • Apply broad knowledge of accounting principles, practices and procedures.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Office environment.
