Senior Lab Engineer II, Dean of the School of Sciences and Engineering, Grant Position

Cairo, Egypt

Job Purpose: The job holder is responsible for supervising the assigned laboratories and overseeing the installation of new assets, as well as the operation, maintenance, and repair of existing equipment and infrastructure. The role includes conducting or supervising required maintenance activities, providing hands-on training and technical support to students in their coursework, projects, competitions, and innovation initiatives. Additionally, the job holder supports faculty members and researchers with their technical needs, ensuring smooth lab operations in full alignment with the AUC standards, procedures and policies.


Core Responsibilities:

● Operate and Maintain Lab Assets: Ensure the proper operation, upkeep, and safety of all assigned assets within the Learning Factory (LF), including machinery, tools, equipment, and infrastructure

● User Training and Orientation: Provide comprehensive training and orientation for LF users,

including students, faculty, and staff, on the safe and effective use of available machines and

equipment

● Student Support and Project Guidance: Mentor and guide students through the design thinking process, helping them translate innovative ideas into functional, manufacturable designs

● Design Review and Optimization: Review student and project designs to ensure feasibility and

optimize them for manufacturability using available LF resources

● Outsourcing and Supervision: Coordinate the outsourcing of complex or heavy manufacturing tasks to external workshops or vendors as needed, while overseeing the quality and timeline of

execution

● Inventory Management: Maintain an accurate and up-to-date inventory of all LF items, including equipment, tools, devices, and consumables

● Regularly audit stock levels to ensure availability

● Procurement and Market Research: Handle the procurement of consumables and minor supplies from local vendors, including conducting market research and preparing purchase requests in line with AUC procurement procedures

● Equipment Maintenance and Troubleshooting: Perform or supervise routine preventive and

corrective maintenance

● Troubleshoot equipment malfunctions to ensure minimal downtime and optimal functionality

● Website Support and Content Management: Assist in building, updating, and maintaining the LF website to ensure accurate representation of services, resources, and ongoing activities

● Marketing and Communication: Support the development of promotional materials such as

brochures, presentations, and digital content to highlight LF offerings and achievements

● Community Engagement and Outreach: Organize and conduct regular lab tours, workshops, and training sessions for the AUC community to promote awareness and engagement with LF facilities

● Reporting and Documentation: Prepare and submit monthly activity reports detailing LF utilization, events, and student engagement

● Compile a yearly plan for equipment upgrades and maintenance schedules

● Other Duties: Perform any additional tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor, in

alignment with the role’s purpose and departmental needs


Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

B.Sc. in mechanical engineering or a related discipline, such as production and design background is a must

● A minimum of three years of previous experience in a related field and equipment run, such as

working in FabLab, design or Research and Development


Skills:

● Proficiency in English: Advanced reading and writing skills in English for effective communication, documentation, and reporting

● Familiarity with industry-specific terminology and language of the trade: Understands and can use the specialized words, phrases, and jargon commonly used in the market or industry to effectively communicate with local vendors and staff as well as teach the students those terminologies

● Technical Software Knowledge: Working knowledge of computer programs used in both design and manufacturing workflows, e.g., CAD, CAM, slicing software, and others

● Hands-on Equipment Experience: Practical experience in operating and maintaining fabrication and prototyping equipment such as 3D printers, laser cutters, laser scanners, CNC machines, and

metalworking tools

● Troubleshooting and Diagnostic Skills: Strong ability to identify, isolate, and resolve equipment

faults and technical issues quickly and effectively

● Preventive and Corrective Maintenance: Demonstrated hands-on skills in maintaining lab

equipment and infrastructure to ensure reliability and minimize downtime

● Time Management and Planning: Ability to prioritize tasks, manage time efficiently, and meet

deadlines in a dynamic, project-driven environment

● Teamwork and Collaboration: Strong team player with the ability to collaborate across different

stakeholders, including students, faculty, vendors, and fellow staff

● Interpersonal and Communication Skills: Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication

abilities, with a professional and approachable demeanor

● Ability to Work Under Pressure: Maintains performance and composure in high-demand or fast- paced environments, especially during peak project times or tight deadlines
