We are seeking a Senior Learning Experience Consultant / Project Manager to lead the design of field-based training for unconventional wells operators and mechanics at a major oil & gas company. This hands-on training will primarily take place outdoors, around wells. The role focuses on creating an engaging, applied learning journey that bridges the gap between Training Center instruction and real-world operations, ensuring that field operators and mechanics can competently operate and maintain unconventional well production equipment.

Building on the success of the foundational Training Center program, this consultant will embed lessons learned into the new curriculum—designing a learner experience that enables field personnel to apply operational knowledge, safety practices, and equipment-specific procedures confidently and competently in plant environments.

The ideal consultant will collaborate closely with operational leaders, including the project sponsor, to co-create a vision for “what great looks like” in OJT and apprenticeship-style learning.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design the learner experience—building a structured yet flexible model that goes beyond checklists to deliver meaningful, task-based, real-world learning.
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders (including operations leadership and SMEs) to define learning goals, performance outcomes, and success measures.
  • Integrate insights and best practices from the Training Center programs to create scalable, field-specific learning paths.
  • Partner with local plant teams to understand site conditions, equipment, and operational nuances to ensure the learning reflects real-world complexity.
  • Develop frameworks, tools, and templates to support an effective OJT and competency verification process (e.g., apprenticeship models, task-based performance guides).
  • Provide strategic consultation on best practices in applied learning and demonstrate how to design engaging, measurable, and sustainable OJT programs.
  • Manage project scope, deliverables, and timelines while maintaining strong, proactive communication with stakeholders.
  • Serve as a thought partner to the client sponsor, helping shape the long-term vision for learning excellence within operations.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 8 years of experience in Instructional Design, Learning Experience Design, or Field-Based Training Development within oil & gas, utilities, manufacturing, or other safety-critical industries.
  • Proven ability to design experiential, task-based learning and apprenticeship-style programs for technical and operational audiences.
  • Experience creating dynamic OJT or competency-based training frameworks that extend beyond verification checklists.
  • Strong collaborator able to build trust and relationships while confidently leading design direction and driving deadlines.
  • Deep understanding of adult learning principles, applied learning strategies, and competency verification models.
  • Experience working on-site in plant or field environments to understand operations and tailor learning design accordingly.
  • Excellent project management skills, with the ability to balance scope, schedule, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Strong communication and facilitation skills; able to guide conversations, manage expectations, and drive alignment across diverse stakeholders.

Additional Details:

  • Occasional travel to Midland will be required due to the need for on-site collaboration and operational familiarity.
  • Tools & Equipment: Consultant must provide their own laptop and authoring software licenses.
  • Attributes: Confident, proactive, and collaborative—able to make recommendations, define best practices, and model excellence in learning design.
  • Work Style: Consultant will have flexibility in work hours and delivery approach, operating autonomously while collaborating closely with the client team.

Start Date: ASAP

Duration: 6 months with potential for extension

Work Hours: 40 hours per week

Location: Midland, TX (Hybrid – some onsite presence required – travel expenses will be reimbursed)

Duration: Contract (initial engagement through Q1 2026, with potential extension through 2027)

The pay range is $70 to $75 per hour on a W2 basis and is determined by a number of factors, including but not limited to skill set, depth of experience, relevant education, certifications, and specific work location.
