Senior Safety Officer-Facilities Maintenance

JOB DESCRIPTION

Responsible for the strategic planning, development, implementation, evaluation and continuous improvement of the safety, environment and emergency preparedness programs. This responsibility includes designing programs and procedures to control, eliminate and prevent disease or injury caused by chemical, physical, and biological agents or ergonomic factors. Also responsible for conducting inspections and enforcing adherence to laws and regulations governing the health and safety of staff, patients and visitors to the facility.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Creates procedures on safe work practices organization-wide, within specific departments, or for particular risk factors and issues within the workplace.
• Collaborates with engineers and facility management staff to institute control and remedial measures for hazardous and potentially hazardous conditions or equipment.
• Ensures all departments are effectively monitored for compliance with safety standards and procedures.
• Ensures and performs assessments of safety hazards, unsafe conditions, risks and practices within the workplace and based on this assessment, recommends a plan for safety that minimizes risk and promotes safety.
• Provides orders for suspension of activities that pose threats to patient, worker or visitor health and safety.
• Ensures training/education is implemented, evaluated and improved on a regular basis.
• Investigates accidents to identify causes and to determine how similar accidents might be prevented in the future.
• Develops the hazardous materials program, auditing and training.
• Maintains the database and documents.

QUALIFICATIONS Experience Required

• 4-6 years of relevant experience.

Desired

• Experience in a large healthcare facility.

Educational Qualification Required

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent in a relevant field such as Occupational Health, Safety, Environment or Industrial Hygiene, OR Diploma in relevant field with 3 years of additional experience.

Desired

• Master's degree or equivalent in a relevant field.
