GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION

A Senior Technical Production Designer at AOA is responsible for bridging the gap between creative vision and real-world execution. This role combines technical design, detailed documentation, and hands-on fabrication expertise to turn conceptual ideas into functional, buildable realities. You’ll interpret creative intent and translate it into precise construction and production documentation—balancing design ambition with practicality, safety, and efficiency.

The ideal candidate is both a problem solver and a maker, fluent in digital and manual fabrication methods, and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment that requires adaptability and precision. You will collaborate closely with creative directors, architects, engineers, fabricators, and vendors to develop production strategies, solve challenges on the fly, and deliver world-class, technically sound results.

Experience in entertainment, live events, theatrical production, experiential design, or themed environments is highly valued. A strong portfolio showcasing innovative builds and technical creativity is required.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Technical Design & Engineering

  • Interpret creative concepts and translate them into comprehensive 3D models, technical drawings, and production documentation.
  • Design solutions that prioritize buildability, material efficiency, and fabrication workflow from concept to completion.
  • Produce detailed technical drawings, specifications, and CNC-ready files with clear direction for fabrication teams.
  • Collaborate with clients, internal teams, and engineers to clarify intent, refine budgets, and ensure feasibility.

Production Coordination & Fabrication

  • Determine fabrication strategies—what is built in-house versus contracted externally.
  • Execute high-quality prototype and mock-up fabrication using carpentry, metalwork, CNC, and 3D printing techniques.
  • Coordinate rigging, lighting, and grip/gaff operations for installations and mockups.
  • Maintain accuracy and precision throughout fabrication and assembly processes.

Technical Systems & Equipment

  • Configure, troubleshoot, and program A/V, projection, LED, lighting, and automation systems.
  • Operate media servers and apply DMX/Artnet lighting control protocols.
  • Apply knowledge of practical effects, illusion principles, and interactive technologies.

Project & Team Collaboration

  • Manage complex builds under fast timelines while maintaining safety and quality.
  • Communicate effectively across disciplines and maintain professional client relationships.
  • Work both independently and collaboratively, adapting to evolving project needs.
  • Mentor team members and foster a positive, solution-focused work environment.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Experience

  • Minimum 10 years of experience in technical design, fabrication, and installation for entertainment, live events, or experiential environments.
  • Proven track record leading technical builds and managing teams under tight deadlines.
  • Experience working with major studios, agencies, or production companies is preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in industrial design, Architecture, Engineering, or related field preferred.

Technical Proficiency

  • Advanced proficiency in Rhino, AutoCAD, Fusion 360, SketchUp, and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Strong CNC programming and operation experience (3-axis minimum).
  • Expertise in fabrication processes—carpentry, welding, 3D printing, and finishing.
  • Familiarity with A/V system design, lighting programming (DMX/Artnet), and projection mapping.
  • Skilled in reading and producing construction and fabrication documentation.

Certifications (Preferred)

  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety Certification
  • Rigging certification (ETCP or equivalent)
  • Forklift and aerial lift operation certifications

Personal Attributes

  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
  • Highly organized, self-motivated, and detail-oriented.
  • Positive, collaborative approach with a willingness to both teach and learn.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
