Shift Lead – Job Description

Position Summary

The Shift Lead is responsible for overseeing daily operations during their assigned shift to ensure high-quality resident care, staff accountability, and compliance with company policies. This role provides direct supervision to caregiving staff, supports medication management oversight, and serves as the acting leader on duty in the absence of upper management.

The Shift Lead ensures tasks are completed timely, documentation is accurate, and residents are safe and supported.

Essential Responsibilities

Leadership & Staff Supervision

  • Supervise caregivers and med techs during assigned shift.

  • Ensure proper staffing coverage and task delegation.

  • Conduct shift huddles and communicate priorities.

  • Monitor staff performance and address concerns in real time.

  • Report disciplinary or performance issues to management.

  • Support training of new employees.

Resident Care Oversight

  • Ensure residents receive care per individualized service plans.

  • Monitor high-risk residents and report changes in condition.

  • Respond to call lights and assist with care as needed.

  • Ensure timely completion of rounds and safety checks.

  • Respond appropriately to incidents, emergencies, and family concerns.

Medication & Documentation

  • Oversee medication pass to ensure accuracy and timeliness.

  • Audit charting and documentation in PCC (or EMR system).

  • Ensure incident reports and required documentation are completed before shift end.

Communication

  • Provide thorough shift report to incoming staff.

  • Communicate urgent issues to the Executive Director or on-call manager.

  • Collaborate with nursing, maintenance, housekeeping, and other departments.

Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with state regulations and company policies.

  • Maintain infection control standards.

  • Conduct safety rounds to ensure secure environment.

  • Support survey readiness.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.

  • Prior caregiving or med tech experience required.

  • Leadership experience preferred.

  • Strong communication and organizational skills.

  • Ability to lead with professionalism and accountability.

  • Med tech experience.
