Performs the duties of a shuttle bus driver for the University of South Carolina Upstate. Drives students, faculty and staff in a safe and effective manner to the downtown business school, athletic events and special events using USC Upstate shuttle buses. In a backup capacity, performs the duties of a Motor Coach driver for the University of South Carolina Upstate. Drives students, faculty and staff in a safe and effective manner to athletic events and special events using USC Upstate motor coaches. Some events will require overnight travel and extended hours. Provides route planning and preparation for trips.
  • Drives shuttle buses from Upstate campus to the George Dean Johnson Jr. College of Business and Economics in downtown Spartanburg and back for daytime and evening classes. Drives shuttle buses to take students to grocery trips. Drives shuttle buses to special events and athletic events. Special and Athletic events may include overnight and out of state trips.
  • Driver must provide excellent customer service to all passengers. Communicates with passengers in a friendly manner, and is able to handle any issues that may arise with professionalism. Effectively communicates any safety and/or policy information as well as any unexpected delays or trip interruptions.
  • Driver administrative duties include but not limited to:
    • Complete pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspection checklist every driving day as instructed
    • Complete and turn in monthly mileage logs as instructed
    • In coordination with Transportation Coordinator, complete all routine vehicle maintenance before the day of trips, ensuring that fuel and fluid levels, tire pressure, etc. are sufficient for the start of trips.
    • Drive buses to and from shop maintenance
    • Promptly report any vehicle maintenance issues or concerns as instructed
    • Promptly report any trip issues such as logistical problem with a destination, passenger behavior issues, etc. as instructed
  • In a backup capacity, safely transport Athletics teams to athletic events primarily operating USC Upstate 54 passenger motor coach bus. Athletic trips will include all team transportation including stopping for meals, excursions on non-competition days, trips from hotels to practices, etc. Some athletic competitions will require driving long distances and overnight stays. Driver must practice good time management in all duties, not causing any delays in Athletics operations. Driver must operate buses and perform all duties compliant to relevant DOT, state, and federal laws and regulations. Must understand and follow all USC system and USC Upstate policies, protocols, and procedures.
  • When driving the motor coach, upon receipt of individual trip itineraries, perform route research, route inspection, and planning in coordination with Transportation Coordinator and Ancillary Services Manager when necessary to ensure that all routes and stops can safely and responsibly accommodate the motor coach and that the itinerary as scheduled, is conducive to responsible driving and operating of motor coach.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Must have a high school diploma; at least 21 years of age; have valid South Carolina driver’s license with acceptable driving record; possess a Class B (P) endorsement with D.O.T. card, with at least 3 years experience as certified Class B (P) driver and D.O.T. card required. A successful background check is required. A negative pre-employment drug screen is required.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Ability to work varying schedules, effective time management, ability to pass DOT physicals, ability to handle confidential information appropriately.
