Slab 2nd Man - Plumbing

GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

The Slab 2nd Man – Plumbing plays a pivotal role in bridging hands-on installation with on-site leadership, supporting the Slab Foreman while guiding laborers through daily underground.
This position is ideal for someone who wants to advance in the plumbing trade, enjoys problem-solving in the field, and is motivated by seeing tangible progress each day. The Slab 2nd Man contributes directly to jobsite efficiency, quality, and readiness—helping ensure every slab and underground installation reflects Stancil’s craftsmanship and commitment to excellence.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Assist with installing, preparing, and maintaining underground plumbing systems during slab and rough-in phases.
  • Ensure trucks and crews remain operational in the foreman’s absence to prevent scheduling delays.
  • Support blueprint interpretation by marking layouts, identifying installation paths, and staging required materials.
  • Perform trenching, grading, bedding preparation, and backfilling tasks to support underground plumbing installations.
  • Transport, load, unload, and distribute tools, pipe, fittings, equipment, and materials across the jobsite.
  • Measure, cut, and prepare pipe and fittings; assist in assembling, placing, and aligning plumbing systems as directed.
  • Help perform pressure tests, observe gauges, and support leak detection or system adjustments.
  • Operate hand tools, power tools, and jobsite equipment after proper training and under supervision.
  • Maintain jobsite cleanliness, debris removal, and material organization to ensure readiness and safety.
  • Communicate field needs, material shortages, or installation concerns to the Slab Foreman promptly.
  • Coordinate with laborers and other trades to support smooth project execution.
  • Follow all safety procedures, use PPE, and report hazards or unsafe conditions.
  • Perform physically demanding work required for slab and underground plumbing operations.
  • Assist the Slab Foreman in directing daily workflow and guiding laborers on tasks.
  • Help train or mentor less experienced team members in proper installation and safety practices.
  • Support the Foreman in maintaining jobsite organization, productivity, and communication with other trades.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED, college, technical or trade school transcript, or foreign equivalent) preferred.
  • Prior plumbing, construction, or underground utility experience strongly preferred.
  • Ability to read basic layouts, follow instructions, and assist in interpreting construction drawings.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to support both leadership and labor teams.
  • Valid driver’s license for 3+ years and insurable on company policy.
  • OSHA 10 certification a plus but not required.
  • Ability to work outdoors and perform physically demanding tasks in varying conditions.
  • Willingness to adapt to new technologies, processes, and the company’s growth-driven environment.
  • Must be able to successfully complete a physical examination and maintain a valid DOT medical card.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT AND CONDITIONS
  • Work is performed outdoors on active construction sites in all weather conditions.
  • Exposure to extreme heat (above 90°F), cold (below 32°F), rain, mud, dust, and other environmental elements.
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, lifting, digging, trenching, and carrying materials.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 75+ pounds regularly.
  • Work may occur in trenches, crawl spaces, and uneven or confined areas.
  • Noise levels range from moderate to loud depending on equipment and jobsite activity.
  • May operate or ride in vehicles for extended periods.
  • Requires consistent use of PPE and adherence to all safety policies.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT
  • Hand tools: shovels, rakes, picks, levels, tape measures, trench tools, crimpers, cutters, wrenches, screwdrivers.
  • Power tools: drills, saws, impacts, compactors, cutting equipment (after training and under supervision), jackhammers, cameras.
  • Jobsite equipment: wheelbarrows, ladders, carts, pumps, material-handling tools, excavator (tractor), dampers, pulling trailers, trench boxes.
  • PPE: hard hat, gloves, safety glasses, boots, high-visibility vest, hearing protection.
  • Company-issued technology may be used for communication or documenting job progress.
