Job Summary
The Solar Permitting Engineer is responsible for preparing, reviewing, and submitting permit packages for residential and commercial solar projects. This role ensures all documentation meets local, state, and national code requirements. Ideal for electrical or mechanical engineers, the position focuses on technical review, code compliance, and coordination with design teams to support timely approval of solar installations.
Key Responsibilities
Permitting & Documentation
Prepare and compile complete permit packages for solar PV, battery storage, and related electrical systems.
- Review site plans, single-line diagrams, structural layouts, and equipment specifications for accuracy and compliance.
- Ensure all submissions meet AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) requirements and applicable building, structural, mechanical, and electrical codes.
Track permit progress and resubmit corrections as required.
Technical Review
- Evaluate electrical and mechanical components of solar designs for code compliance.
- Ensure systems meet NEC, IBC, IRC, and local jurisdiction requirements.
- Review equipment selection, load calculations, wiring diagrams, and structural details.
- Provide quality control on engineering drawings prepared by design teams.
Coordination & Communication
- Work with design engineers, project managers, and CAD teams to resolve permitting issues.
- Communicate with permitting authorities regarding submission requirements or clarifications.
- Document all permitting notes, revisions, and jurisdiction-specific changes.
Skills & Qualifications
Required:
- Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Renewable Energy, or a related field.
- Understanding of solar PV systems (residential or commercial).
- Familiarity with electrical and/or mechanical codes (NEC, IBC, IRC).
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications.
- Strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy.
- Ability to work independently during night shift operations.
Preferred:
- Experience in solar permitting, plan review, or PV design.
- Knowledge of energy storage systems (ESS).
- Experience with tools such as AutoCAD, Aurora, Helioscope, or other PV design software.
- EIT/FE certification or PE license (optional but valuable).
