Role Overview:
A rooftop solar site engineer is responsible for overseeing the on-site execution of solar photovoltaic (PV) projects, from initial assessment through installation, testing, and commissioning. This role requires a blend of technical expertise, project management skills, and a strong focus on quality and safety.
Key responsibilities
Pre-construction
- Site assessment: Conduct detailed on-site surveys to verify technical feasibility. This includes evaluating the roof’s structure, taking precise measurements, and identifying potential issues like shading.
- Design coordination: Work with the in-house design team to review and approve layout plans, single-line diagrams (SLDs), and other schematics.
- Permitting and liaison: Assist in preparing and submitting documentation for necessary permits. Liaise with local authorities and other stakeholders as required.
- Material verification: Conduct a joint inspection of all materials delivered to the site to ensure they match the specifications and quantity ordered.
Construction and installation
- Project supervision: Supervise the installation process for all mechanical, civil, and electrical components, including PV modules, mounting structures, inverters, and cabling.
- Quality control: Ensure all work is performed according to engineering standards, specifications, and the company’s quality control plan.
- Safety enforcement: Implement and enforce strict Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) protocols on-site, including safety-at-height procedures.
- Progress monitoring: Track and report on project milestones, budget, and schedules. Conduct daily or weekly site meetings to review progress and resolve issues with the installation crew.
- Technical support: Serve as the primary technical point of contact for the installation team, providing guidance and troubleshooting assistance for any issues that arise.
Post-construction and handover
- Testing and commissioning: Oversee the testing of the completed system to verify performance and functionality, including anti-islanding protection and power quality.
- Handover: Prepare the final documentation and give a formal handover of the project to the operations and maintenance (O&M) team.
- Client training: Provide training to the client’s personnel on the operation of the solar system.
- Final reporting: Submit detailed project reports, including as-built drawings, to the project manager and other stakeholders.
Qualifications and requirements
- Education: Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, or Renewable Energy Engineering.
- Experience: 2–5 years of experience in the execution or installation of rooftop solar PV projects.
- Technical knowledge: Strong understanding of solar PV systems, including panels, inverters, wiring, mounting structures, and grid connectivity.
- Design software: Familiarity with design and simulation tools like AutoCAD and PVsyst is a plus.
- Codes and standards: Working knowledge of relevant electrical codes and standards, as well as industry safety regulations.
- Project management: Demonstrated ability to manage project timelines, budgets, and resource allocation.
- Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills for reporting and liaising with teams, clients, and authorities.
- Problem-solving: Strong analytical skills with the ability to troubleshoot technical and logistical issues on-site.
- Other: Willingness to travel to project sites as required.
