Squad Leader/Master Technician

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
The primary function of this position is to troubleshoot, remove, install, replace, re-build, repair, & test parts/equipment on construction equipment at an expert as well as lead and coach other technicians. This position may also assist in coordinating shop repair activities, monitoring work progress, supporting customer communication, and completing service documentation to ensure accurate work orders and proper customer billing.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Equipment Diagnostics and Repair
  • Perform independent troubleshooting, inspection, and repair of construction equipment using service manuals, parts manuals, and technical diagrams
  • Use hand and power tools to remove, install, replace, rebuild, repair, and test parts and components on construction equipment
  • Disassemble and reassemble equipment components using appropriate tools and perform diagnostic testing using specialized instruments and equipment
  • Perform inspections, preventative maintenance, and advanced repairs on engines, power train, hydraulic, and electrical systems across multiple equipment model lines
  • Use instruments and computer systems to diagnose issues and reprogram equipment controllers
Equipment Handling and Component Removal
  • Operate lift trucks, overhead cranes, forklifts, hoists, and other lifting devices to move equipment components into position for repair
  • Remove and reinstall major machine components such as tracks, idlers, blades, and related assemblies for disassembly, repair, and reassembly
  • Lift, carry, and position equipment components including rams used to remove idlers and other heavy parts using appropriate lifting devices
Equipment Access, Preparation, and Finishing
  • Climb onto, under, and into equipment to access components requiring inspection or repair
  • Clean equipment and components using rags, cleaners, and power washing equipment to support repair activities
  • Use power washers and spray paint equipment to clean and refinish equipment as required
Technical Systems and Service Documentation
  • Use dealership computer systems and technical resources to reference parts information, review service documentation, and enter repair data into service systems as necessary
  • Document repair activities and maintain accurate service records in accordance with company procedures
  • Review service work documentation for completeness and accuracy prior to final processing or invoicing as necessary
  • Access and distribute relevant technical service information including product support bulletins and service letters related to repair work as needed
Shop Coordination and Work Progress Monitoring
  • Check equipment, tools, and supplies required to perform scheduled work and ensure compliance with PPE requirements
  • Assist with coordinating and scheduling shop repair work to support efficient workflow and maximize shop productivity as necessary
  • Monitor repair progress and communicate status updates to appropriate personnel as required
Leadership
  • Assist supervisor with performance appraisals
  • Coach, guide, and develop technicians
  • Direct day-to-day job assignments and responsibilities for up to five or more technicians in the squad
  • Work with squad members to ensure proper troubleshooting techniques are used to meet customer and company quality expectations
  • Provide technical guidance and on-the-job training to newly assigned technicians regarding shop procedures, systems, and repair practices
  • Assist in planning or supporting departmental safety meetings, training sessions, and technical discussions with technicians as needed
  • Communicate operational concerns, repair issues, or workflow challenges to supervision to support efficient shop operations and customer satisfaction
Customer Service:
  • May assist with responding to customer service inquiries, coordinating repair requests, and ensuring clear communication regarding equipment repair status when required
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education:
Must have a high school education or GED.

Work Experience:
Eight years of Cat equipment experience. Fully understands all equipment systems (i.e. engines, hydraulics, electrical, sub-electrical, transmissions, etc.) for almost all equipment model lines.

Physical:
Must be able to daily and repeatedly stoop, kneel, bend and climb besides, onto and underneath various equipment to perform diagnosis and repairs; Must be able to effectively see to perform repairs, research technical manuals, and develop written repair work order reports. Must be able to routinely and physically lift/position various parts to perform repairs/service and manually handle parts up to 100 pounds, as well as use mechanical hoist for heavier parts.

Other:
Must be able to effectively write repair activities on customer work orders; Must have cognitive reasoning and problem-solving skills to apply knowledge, written information and verbal instructions in repairing/servicing unusual and/or unknown technical equipment operational problems. Should have exposure to P.C. base equipment and parts information; Can work independently with minimal supervision. Ability to effectively communicate with others; provides training of other technicians, assigns work assignments, and promotes good customer service and resolves their problems.
