What You’ll Get to Do
The Senior Environmental Engineer will provide leadership and technical expertise to ensure environmental compliance and sustainability for two aluminum extrusion, anodizing and painting facilities. This role is responsible for managing regulatory programs, permits, and initiatives related to air, water, wastewater, hazardous materials, and waste management. The Senior Environmental Engineer will partner with operations, maintenance, and corporate teams to implement best practices, optimize environmental performance, and support continuous improvement in alignment with company goals and regulatory requirements.

This position is ideal for a hands-on professional with a passion for building programs from the ground up. As a key contributor to the Operations Environmental team, it offers a unique opportunity to shape an environmental compliance program while growing your career with a recognized industry leader.

Job responsibilities include

Regulatory Compliance & Permitting

Manage federal, state, and local environmental permits, including:

  • Industrial sewer user wastewater discharge permits (acid/alkaline wastewaters, heavy metals, wastewater treatment system performance).
  • Air permits (paint spray booths, curing ovens, VOC and HAP emissions).
  • Hazardous waste generation and management (EPA RCRA requirements, universal waste, used oil).
  • Stormwater and SPCC plans (secondary containment, inspections, corrective actions).
  • Prepare and submit required environmental reports (e.g., TRI/Form R, Tier II, compliance certification reporting, Self-Monitoring Reports, Biennial Hazardous Waste Reports).
  • Serve as primary contact for regulatory agencies during inspections, reporting, and correspondence.

Environmental Program Management

  • Oversee the operation, monitoring, and optimization of wastewater treatment systems (pH adjustment, precipitation, sludge handling, permit monitoring).
  • Lead hazardous waste management activities including labeling, storage, shipping, and manifest reconciliation.
  • Manage air emission control equipment and compliance tracking.
  • Ensure compliance with chemical storage requirements and implement best practices for spill prevention and emergency response.
  • Maintain and update environmental management systems.

Technical Support & Leadership

  • Lead team-based Design of Experiment (DOE) projects, structured problem-solving exercises, process failure mode & effects analysis (PFMEAs), action plan development and implementation, and other structured diagnostic processes to identify process system improvement opportunities,
  • Provide guidance to engineers, technicians, and plant staff on environmental requirements and safe operating practices.
  • Review new processes, materials, and equipment for environmental impacts; support Management of Change (MOC).
  • Develop and deliver training on environmental topics (waste handling, stormwater, spill response, chemical management).
  • Drive sustainability initiatives (water reuse, sludge minimization, energy efficiency, VOC reduction).
  • Act as a subject matter expert for environmental compliance.

What We Are Looking For

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related discipline. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum 7+ years of progressive environmental engineering experience, with at least 3 years in industrial operations.
  • Knowledge of Environmental Regulations: Strong working knowledge of RCRA, CWA, CAA, EPCRA, and state-specific environmental rules.

Technical Skills

  • Wastewater treatment design and operation (pH neutralization, precipitation, sludge handling).
  • Air emissions compliance (VOC/HAPs, Title V or minor source permitting).
  • Hazardous waste management (generator requirements, shipping, cradle-to-grave responsibility).
  • Certifications (Preferred): PE (Professional Engineer).

Physical & Work Environment

  • Work performed in office and industrial manufacturing settings.
  • Occasional exposure to chemical processing areas, paint spray booths, and wastewater treatment systems.
  • Must be able to wear required PPE (respirator, safety glasses, chemical-resistant gloves, etc.).
