About Salt Lake Legal Defender Association (SLLDA):

We are a large nonprofit legal organization, mission-driven public defender office with approximately 200 employees, committed to providing high-quality legal defense and advocacy for individuals accused of crimes who cannot afford an attorney in Salt Lake County. Our team of attorneys, investigators, social workers, and support staff work together to ensure access to justice and fairness in the criminal legal system.

Human Resource Manager/Human Resources Business Partner

General Summary:

We are seeking a Human Resources Manager OR Senior Human Business Partner to help exemplify our values, immerse and expand our current transformational work culture, support our employees, promoting professional evolution and growth, and uphold the values of equity, inclusion, and embody servant leadership.

The Human Resource Manager will play an essential role in the day-to-day people operations in our office. This position provides support across all the HR functions including employee relations, compliance, talent management, learning and development, employee engagement, benefits, compensation, leave administration, talent acquisition, and creating and enforcing company policies and practices, while working collaboratively with leadership in building high performing teams, coaching leaders, and delivering People-related solutions that help attract, engage, and retain top talent.

Primary Responsibilities and Competencies*:

  • Takes ownership of the daily workflow of the Human Resources function in a fair and safe place environment; including employee benefits administration, leave management, and HRIS data management.
  • Recruits, interviews, onboards, and trains new staff to SLLDA.
  • Oversees and manages timely performance evaluation process.
  • Partners with the leadership team to understand and execute the organization's human resource and talent strategy particularly as it relates to current and future talent needs, recruiting, retention, and succession planning.
  • Oversees and provides support and guidance management when complex, specialized, and sensitive questions and issues arise; may be required to administer and execute routine tasks in delicate circumstances such as providing reasonable accommodations, conflict resolution, investigating allegations of wrongdoing, and terminations in accordance with company policy.
  • Manages the talent acquisition process, which may include creating job descriptions, recruitment, interviewing, onboarding, and hiring of qualified job applicants; collaborates with hiring managers to understand skills and competencies required for openings of attorneys, professional staff, and support staff.
  • Analyzes trends in compensation and benefits; researches and proposes competitive base and incentive pay programs to ensure the organization attracts and retains top talent.
  • Creates learning and development programs and initiatives that provide internal development opportunities for employees.
  • Maintains compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommends best practices; reviews policies and practices to maintain compliance.
  • Maintains knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law.
  • Contribute to employee engagement, wellness, diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education, Experience and Certification:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college in HR, Business Administration, or related field.
  • Five (5) years of experience in human resources with considerable experience of working and collaborating with managers and employees on People matters such as policy interpretation, providing People process expertise and/or handling employee/manager escalations required.
  • Strong understanding and experience managing Federal and Utah State employment law.
  • Experience with EEO, ADA, and Affirmative Action Laws.
  • Experience in handling employee relations including performance management, disciplinaries, and terminations.
  • Continued hands-on direct experience in the HR function with responsibilities in areas of employee relations, benefits, employee engagement, and talent acquisition.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.

Preferred Education, Qualifications & Experience:

  • SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP.
  • Experience working Human Resources in a non-profit sector.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $80,000.00 - $98,000.00 per year
