The University of Miami/UHealth Department of SCCC has an exciting opportunity for a Full Time Sr. Manager, Research Laboratory to work at the UHealth medical campus in Miami, FL.
CORE JOB SUMMARY
The Sr. Manager, Research Laboratory provides scientific support and assistance to research laboratories, including all critical and basic laboratory operations. Moreover, the incumbent plans and implements overall laboratory policies, procedures, and services in furtherance of departmental and institutional goals and objectives. This Lab Manager will be a key member of the Molecular Therapeutics Shared Resource (MTSR) of the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center (SCCC).
CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
1. Ensures efficient and effective departmental operations including department quality control and compliance adherence.
2. Formulates and implements short- and long-range goals for the operations of the laboratories.
3. Develops, implements, monitors, and evaluates systems to assess current and projected laboratory services.
4. Serves as a liaison between investigators, research personnel, and staff to resolve specific operating problems and improve technical activities.
5. Advises on technical procedures, techniques, and equipment, and maintains conformance with applicable operational standards.
6. Evaluates and recommends new techniques and technologies.
7. Manages and coordinates the activities of assigned project(s) with responsibility for results in terms of costs, methods, and resources.
8. Installs and maintains laboratory equipment in compliance with federal regulations.
9. Assures that the laboratory technicians are properly trained in standard operating procedures and equipment specific requirements.
10. Establishes and continuously assesses the effectiveness of the internal controls within the unit and compliance with University policies and procedures. Ensures employees are trained on controls within the function and on University policy and procedures.

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field
Experience: Minimum 7 years of relevant experience
This Lab Manager position will be a key member of the Molecular Therapeutics Shared Resource (MTSR) of the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center (SCCC) at the University of Miami. The MTSR provides resources and services to facilitate the identification and development of novel compounds and therapeutics for cancer treatment. The responsibilities of the Lab Manager position include assisting the MTSR Director in supervising technical staff and in operational oversight of MTSR services that facilitate drug discovery and pharmacology research. Responsibilities include assisting in developing, expanding, and supporting infrastructure and processes for target evaluation and assay development; small molecule library preparation, screening, and curation; high throughput screening (HTS) enablement; plate imaging and transfers; assay identification, development and implementation; support for standard and customized assays (including clonogenic and alpha screen assays); support for hit-to-lead pharmacology (including pharmacokinetics); data analytics for hit-picking; investigational new drug enablement; and project management. Responsibilities include monitoring quality assurance procedures, monitoring maintenance and operation of instruments, and interacting with vendors, including instrumentation engineers and field application specialists. The Laboratory Manager interfaces with researchers, clinicians, faculty, trainees and students in support of their projects, including by assisting with project scheduling, sample and process tracking, troubleshooting, and billing for services. Responsibilities also include assisting with and participating in educational workshops and seminars and user group meetings. Under the direction of the MTSR Director, the overall responsibilities of this Laboratory Manager position are to provide services in support of basic and applied research, help manage project timelines and costs, assist in meeting project milestones, and assist in publishing results and preparing grant proposals.
Department Specific Qualifications
Education:
A Ph.D. degree is required, preferably in the biological sciences, with a minimum of 2 years post-doctoral experience, and a total of at least 5 years of experience in a biomedical research laboratory or core facility preferred.
Experience:
Experience in molecular biology techniques (e.g., quantitative real-time PCR, western blots, and ELISA immunoassays) is preferred. Experience with pharmacology, cancer, drug discovery, small molecule screening or related disciplines in academia or pharma is preferred. Experience with preparing publications and research grants is preferred. Record of achievement for delivery of team goals and experience in building successful relations with supervisors, peers, suppliers, customers, partners and stakeholders, are essential. This position requires ability to troubleshoot, meticulous record keeping, and the ability to supervise and motivate staff. Must enjoy working with others, have initiative, and be reliable. Attention to detail and multitasking abilities are critical, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Excellent computer and communication skills are required. Prefer strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills with proven ability to apply creative approaches to complicated questions.
